‘System Integration’ is the new buzz word! Emissions-free sources produced 74% of EU electricity in January-June 2024, of which 50% was from renewable sources like wind and solar, and 24% from nuclear. The main driver of Europe's changing energy mix is the rapid installation of renewable energy capacity. The EU built 56 gigawatts of new solar power capacity in 2023 - the highest in any year to date - and 16GW of new wind capacity (source: Eurelectric). The massive build out of solar and wind creates new challenges like grid congestion and price cannibalization. When the wind blows across the North Sea, all wind parks produce a lot of electricity resulting in low electricity prices. Same is true for solar on a sunny day. Network operators often do not even give the full connection to unlock peak capacity. This will result in a slowdown of solar and wind developments (slower and more expensive energy transition) and grid congestion (loss of economic activity). The cheapest way to get to net zero is 3-5x renewable power generation overcapacity. Problem is that Europe only has 10% #renewableenergy (50% of power, which is 20% of the total energy system) still and that additional developments are increasingly challenged. The solution is ‘System Integration’, solutions that divert surplus electrons to more valuable markets and provide electrons when there is no sun or wind. These solutions need to be flexible to follow the volatility of power markets. #Batteries play an important role, but are economically full in a few hours and hence cannot store a full sunny day. #Battolyser offers a unique #systemintegration solution. As a member of NLHydrogen, we underwrite the letter sent to the European Commission President, explaining the need for resilience criteria in the next round of the #EUHydrogenBank. 🚨 We need to act rapidly to ensure that we: - Lead the race for #cleantech leadership in Europe; - Build new #manufacturing industry in Europe (including jobs, skills, and investments); - Make #hydrogen a key lever for #EU strategic autonomy and #climate’s goals. 🎯 Next step: it becomes crucial for the #Netherlands and Ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei to introduce a similar criterion for the #OWE scheme, boosting the production of #greenhydrogen. 🐝 Wonder what beehives have in common with large scale green hydrogen production? ☀️ Two weeks ago, we joined the Connecting Green Hydrogen Europe 2024 conference in Madrid! While it was a great opportunity to meet partners and industry leaders, it was also the occasion for our colleague Sam de Haas to reflect on the #hydrogeneconomy, and how to integrate large-scale hydrogen production into the #energysystem. Why is it so difficult to unlock 100% #greenhydrogen? Delivering hydrogen projects faces a hurdle: balancing three conflicting perspectives: 🏛🔌 #renewables vs #grid stability  Integrating renewable energy is key to achieving net-zero goals. But this energy is intermittent and needs to be matched with flexible energy demand to keep the grid safe. Flexible electrolyser operation is supported in the EU by REDII and Delegated Acts. 🏭💧 #consumption vs. #production  The EU targets high renewable hydrogen consumption in industries. However, industries seek to contract continuous offtake, making flexible production challenging. This discourages investment and limits green hydrogen availability. 🏗️💰 Project #profitability vs. #system needs  To make projects profitable, developers often prioritize high load hours and limit flexibility. This contradicts grid operator requirements and drives up the energy price for the project, ultimately increasing hydrogen cost. The solution? In our white paper we explore how #ammonia imports can meet continuous demand, allowing #hydrogen projects to not just comply with, but monetize flexibility and reduce the cost of hydrogen. Make “Made in Europe” a Reality for the Electrolyser Industry! Electrolysers are critical for Europe’s strategic independence (resilience) and future strong economy. Earlier this week, we joined other #electrolyser manufacturers to call on the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to support European leadership in #cleantech manufacturing as we face dangerous and unfair #competition from third-party countries. What we need: 1️⃣ a strong, effective, and robust EU Industrial Plan; 2️⃣ resilience measures, starting with tough resilience criteria through the EU Hydrogen Bank; 3️⃣ EU money paid by European taxpayers to promote and support a resilient European electrolyser industry that can support a strong economy. Electrolyser manufacturing holds the biggest potential of all clean technologies for Europe’s industrial base, let’s not lose this industry like #solarPV and act now. Den Haag zet sinds dit jaar met de Nationale Technologie Strategie (NTS) in op tien #sleuteltechnologieën die cruciaal zouden zijn voor de toekomst van een sterk Nederland.
