Despite comprehensive policies to address #HIV and #AIDS in Tanzania, key populations continue to face elevated risk of infection. Intersecting factors like gender, age, sexual orientation, race, sex work and drug use intensify the #marginalisation of these groups and deter individuals from seeking medical care. In his thesis, Gaspar Mbita, PhD Candidate investigated strategies to address the needs of these key populations to reduce HIV transmission rates within their communities and beyond. 👉 On 8 October at 9:45 CE(S)T, he will defend his thesis entitled 𝐵𝑅𝐸𝐴𝐾𝐼𝑁𝐺 𝐶𝐻𝐴𝐼𝑁𝑆, 𝐵𝑈𝐼𝐿𝐷𝐼𝑁𝐺 𝐻𝑂𝑃𝐸 𝐼𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝐼𝑉/𝐴𝐼𝐷𝑆 𝐸𝑝𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑎𝑛𝑧𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑏𝑦 2030 at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). 💻 Follow the defense via live stream at: https://lnkd.in/ezCtW473 📖 More information and read the full thesis via the link below. https://lnkd.in/e7Cw8GXx

🖼️ At Athena - Research and Education Institute, we encourage our science journalism students to explore how the framing of journalistic products might impact public engagement. This past year, masters students Qin van de Stadt, Marijn Heindrik Geyskens, and Maxime Gerber chose to start a conversation about 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 🛣️ 🚗👵On 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬, we invite you to watch their video about the challenges of keeping our elderly loved ones safe on the road, especially as their reaction speeds and attention decline. And join the conversation 💬 📽Dutch with subtitles in English #Scicomm #PublicHealth

Why do learnings from experiments that seek to promote welfare and sustainability not always result in long-term system change? A consortium of Dutch universities along with public and private partners have come together to find out. By combining their knowledge, they aim to address this so-called ‘pilot paradox.’ This will ensure that knowledge and innovations developed in various experimental environments, like #livinglabs, leads to lasting changes in policy, legislation, innovation and financial systems. With funding from the NWO (Dutch Research Council) the #transdisciplinary team will explore how to mainstream and upscale innovations to create long-term systemic impact. 👉 To learn more about this project entitled “From EXperiment to sustainable change: TRAnsformative methodologies for Innovation and learning” (EXTRA), see the NWO press release [in Dutch]: https://lnkd.in/e27Hst9X Congratulations to Athenians Anne Loeber and Bep Schrammeijer, PhD, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) partners Alfons van Marrewijk, Leonore van den Ende, PhD and @J.J. #onderzoek #buurtparticipatie #eenzaamheid #eentegeneenzaamheid

#Stigma is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon that often remains misunderstood. Last week at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Dr. Ruth Peters presented her years-long research on the origins of #leprosy and the associated stigma, in collaboration with the Leprosy Foundation (NLR)/ Leprastichting She addressed key questions around stigma and discussed how we can continue to address it - both with research and through deeper societal reflection 👇
The multi-layered phenomenon of stigma shouldn’t be reduced to simple divisions of good/bad, victim/perpetrator, black/white. This is why, nine years ago, I chose the colour grey for the cover for my PhD dissertation. In my work, I embrace this complexity, and I encourage others to do the same – to reflect more deeply and judge less when addressing stigma and its many manifestations. The Leprastichting gave me the opportunity to speak about this during their recent donor event at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. Together with Henk Menke, who shared insights into the origins of leprosy in Suriname, and Wim van Brakel, who spoke about the essential ingredients to prevent leprosy in the future, I discussed stigma and its profound impact on those affected by leprosy. I addressed key questions, such as: Is stigma unique to leprosy? How can stigma be so severe it leads to thoughts of suicide? And what role could social media play in tackling stigma? As stigma remains a complex, often misunderstood issue, it is important that we keep on addressing it; both in research and through deeper societal reflection.

Identifying 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 in local communities can help to address health-related #stigma, so that individuals with health conditions can live fuller lives. But how do we identify the most relevant cultural capabilities? In newly published guidelines, Athenians Ruth Peters, Marlies Visser, and Marjolein Zweekhorst provide tools for data collection and analysis that help to identify what matters most in local communities. The guidelines are informed by research conducted in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Nepal, and are relevant to health conditions ranging from #leprosy to depressive disorder. 👉 Read and download the #openaccess article from Leprosy Review @ https://lnkd.in/eEcnQ99i 🙏 Thanks to Leprosy Research Initiative for funding this research. 🎉 Congratulations to all the authors: Dadun A, r sutiawan and Yoslien Sopamena @ Universitas Indonesia; Emeka Nwefoh, Madhusudan Subedi मधुसूदन सुवेदी, Lawrence H. Yang @ NYU School of Global Public Health, and Marjolein Zweekhorst, Ruth Peters and Marlies Visser @ Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam)
