We are once again looking to assemble all the species experts in the Netherlands for an event especially for them, on September 28. It will be in Dutch, so if you can read that the Dutch link in the comments is probably more informative. We hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/erRKgqU5

The authority on species identification and biodiversity monitoring in the Netherlands
Over ons
The loss of biodiversity is one of the main threats to humanity's survival. But only if we know what is there, we can make an effort to preserve it. For this reason, we urgently need innovation and tools to facilitate species identification and for monitoring of biodiversity. The ARISE programme aims to construct an infrastructure for doing exactly this, for every species in the Netherlands (multicellular species only - for now). This infrastructure will be the first of its kind, and combine novel technology within sampling of specimen, (e)DNA, AI-based recognition, digital monitoring through images, sound and radar data and digital services combining various data sources to answer biodiversity questions. The vision is to make species recognition and biodiversity accessible, facilitating a comprehensive picture of the country's biodiversity. It will bring together many new insights in many biodiversity related fields, including artificial intelligence and data science. This integrated infrastructure and facility will provide Dutch researchers, nature conservation organizations, policy makers, industry, regional water authorities, infrastructure developers, and many more with access to the most advanced near-real-time identification service for species detection and monitoring biodiversity. This, in turn, will yield new opportunities for understanding how ecosystems function. It will identify trends, and ensure that biodiversity recovery receives the necessary attention in solutions for major societal transitions such as towards nature-inclusive cities and agriculture.

Camera trapping data on GBIF: Our three datasets are the first camera trap data shared on GBIF using the newly developed Camtrap DP (data exchange format for camera trap data) and the new publishing software package (version 3 of the Integrated Publishing Toolkit, #IPT) from GBIF. This extends the data publishing capabilities on GBIF beyond the Darwin Core Archive format to share data obtained from digital biodiversity sensors. Great to see on the GBIF platform all the occurrences together with the digital evidence (images) and all metadata of each data record in a machine- and human-readable #FAIR format! Thanks to Tim Robertson, Matthew Blissett and Mikhail Podolskiy (#GBIF), Peter Desmet (#INBO), Niels Raes and Jeroen Creuwels (#Naturalis, #NLBIF), Julian Evans (#UvA) and Yorick Liefting (#Agouti) for help with data storage and uploading, installation of the new software, and fixing various bugs. #ARISE #MAMBO #EuropaBON #Biodiversa #TABMON #LTERLIFE Dataset pilot 1: https://lnkd.in/e6A8SKkP Dataset pilot 2: https://lnkd.in/ekfe7qH4 Dataset pilot 3: https://lnkd.in/eJkUn_bS

We're looking for (Dutch speaking) volunteers to help us chart the biodiversity of Noord-Brabant. We offer an exciting working environment, training in identifying insects at order level (if you need it), of a fun team and free entrance to the Naturalis museum. Find out more:

Samples are coming in faster than ever, so we have a job opening for a research analist. You will be stationed at Naturalis Biodiversity Center. Speaking Dutch is a requirement.

Last week, we installed a number of insect traps in the Leenderbos and Groote Heide nature reserves. Together with Staatsbosbeheer we'll be monitoring the effects of different nature management decisions. Of course, any species collected that are not yet in our national DNA barcode reference library will be sequenced and added to it. https://lnkd.in/eBtwcDg2

On May 22nd, World Biodiversity Day, NWO (Dutch Research Council) hosts NWO Life, a conference for everyone working in the the Dutch Life Sciences. That means, of course, that we will be there as well. Drop by to learn more about how we go from sample to sequence! Of course, that means you have to register first. Registration closes this Tuesday, so don't forget it!

On May 22nd, our friends at NWO (Dutch Research Council) are organizing Life2024, a place for all life scientists in the Netherlands to meet and learn.
NWO Life 2024 organizes an art contest within the frame of "THE ART OF LIFE"! Yes, that's right. You can send by email any piece of science that you consider art before May 1st! There will be prizes too, of course. By the way, you can still submit an abstract and register until April 30th. I look forward to meeting you there! More info and registration: www.nwolife.nl NWO (Dutch Research Council) Thanks to Niels van der Windt for filming this little piece!
