We are pleased to announce the start of construction of the battery energy storage (BESS) project “Strübbel” in Northern Germany. With 50 MW / 100 MWh, this will be one of the largest and most advanced battery storage projects in the country. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁: 🟢 One of the first two-hour storage systems in Germany with a capacity of 50MW, which can supply 120,000 households with electricity for two hours 🟢 Located in an onshore wind area contributing to the stability of the power grid and helping the integration of clean energies 🟢 BESS projects ideally complement clean energy fund portfolios since BESS generate revenue when clean energy plants do not and vice-versa. Strübbel is the first of 14 battery storage projects planned by Aquila Group in Germany, with a total capacity of over 900 MW, as part of the 4.5 GW BESS portfolio that Aquila Group manages across Europe and which are developed by Aquila Clean Energy EMEA. In an electricity mix with a high share of renewable energy, battery storage systems make an important contribution to system stability. They are therefore a key factor in making affordable, clean electricity available to all market participants.🌍 For more information, please read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/dU7dBgsf #BatteryStorage #BESS #CleanEnergy

Aquila Capital is diversifying the portfolio of our clean energy funds by integrating investments in battery energy storage systems (BESS). Our BESS investments are complementary to the producing clean energy assets like solar PV or wind energy since they balance energy supply and demand. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: BESS can discharge during peak demand to regulate and stabilise the grid and charge during low consumption to reduce energy costs 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Falling battery cost and lower lithium prices make BESS increasingly affordable 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: Opportunities in ancillary services, grid balancing and electricity market optimisation boost BESS revenue and diversify renewable portfolios We are proud to contribute to the global energy transition while providing sustainable investment opportunities for our clients. From classroom to clean energy! Happy to share a recent initiative from our team at 20MW Triwa wind park in Kepno, Poland. Nine Siemens Gamesa turbines combine 20 MW capacity of renewable energy production and recently played host to 24 curious minds and 2 dedicated teachers. ABO Wind, our Technical and Commercial Manager, joined in, alongside three representatives from Siemens Gamesa, for a special Earth Day visit, where children delved into the world of renewable energy and wind turbine operations. Under careful supervision, they even got to explore the ground level of these towering marvels. Inspiring the next generation, one turbine at a time! #CleanEnergy #WindPower #EarthDay #AquilaCapital

At the recent BAI Alternative Investor Conference 2024, Max Sergelius, Team Head Product Legal at Aquila Capital, joined a panel of industry experts to discuss the topic "Infrastructure – An Overview of German Fund Structures and Comparison of Tax and Regulatory Advantages and Disadvantages." Max and fellow panellists discussed recent changes in the infrastructural fund landscape at both German and European levels, including the German “Infrastruktursondervermögen” and the recent reform of the European Long-Term Investment Fund (ELTIF 2.0). Max highlighted different structuring options for institutional funds as well as retail funds, using our recently launched AC One Planet ELTIF as a prime example. Against the background of vast investment needs on the one hand and high interest rates and the need of institutional investors in particular to (re-)balance their portfolios on the other hand, leveraging retail fund formats like ELTIF in order to broaden the investor base is an exciting opportunity for the financing of infrastructure assets. The panel engaged in a fruitful discussion on regulatory and tax matters and pitfalls. In summary, there is clearly a lot of excitement in the market about the new structuring possibilities in particular for retail offerings. Comparing the structural alternatives, the European ELTIF format offers more flexibility than its German counterpart “Infrastruktursondervermögen”. On the tax side, for institutional funds a need to harmonise/improve cumbersome German taxation rules was identified, whilst tax incentives for retail investors would be an effective tool to channel retail money into much needed infrastructure investments. Last but not least managers looking to launch an ELTIF should pay close attention to the still rather limited settlement options in the German market which may pose a challenge from an operational perspective.
