In its latest Environmental Report 2024, Google has recognised the need for improved water stewardship practices across its data centres, offices and supply chain. The report revealed that the growth of AI had led to a 17 per cent increase in its water footprint in 2023 compared to the previous year, driven largely by cooling demands of its data centres. Like fellow tech giants Apple and Microsoft, Google has set ambitious water targets as it looks to minimise its impact on the environment and local watersheds. In 2012, the Dutch government adopted the Drinking Water Policy Paper 2021-2026. The policy’s main objective is to 'provide sufficient drinking water of good quality for everyone in the European and Caribbean Netherlands, now and in the future’. The policy was further adapted in May 2022, through the Implementation and Implementation Agenda (IenU agenda), which stated that ‘the central government will develop an approach for economical and conscious drinking water use together with local authorities, drinking water companies and stakeholders’. However, a combination of periods of drought and bottlenecks in capacity expansion by drinking water companies has led to growing media attention and put the future availability of drinking water on the agenda. European Commission has adopted its Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 which includes a goal to strengthen water resilience across the union. The Strategic Agenda establishes the EU’s directions and goals for the period 2024-2029. Its aim is to make Europe more sovereign and better able to face future challenges from changing geo-politics. There are three pillars to the agenda: • A free and democratic Europe • A strong and secure Europe • A prosperous and competitive Europe. Water resilience is added under the final pillar, under the sub-heading: Making a success of the green and digital transitions. #Water #EU #Europe #WaterResilience

A year has passed since the EU restriction proposal for PFAS were published. At the time, there was concern that the industry’s preferred membrane material, PVDF, might fall foul of the proposals. Dr Graeme Pearce discusses whether PVDF membranes have any long-term prospects and, if not, whether ceramics will benefit from the restrictions. #Water #Membranes #Europe #PFAS

Drought is pushing more utilities towards water reuse, bringing them at loggerheads with the brine disposal challenge. Carbon-based advanced treatment (CBAT) is increasingly being seen as an alternative to RO, currently in indirect potable reuse projects, but also with a future predicted uptick in direct potable reuse. Global Water Intelligence (GWI)’s Luke Bratt examines how media costs and emerging contaminant removal is shaping this growing trend. #CBAT #Reuse #CircularEconomy #ReverseOsmosis

The world of water is a paradox in many ways. Ageing infrastructure, unfit and unable to keep up with the demands of population growth and industry demand in many parts of the world, while creaking and leaking in others – it’s all over the news. However, on the flip side, the world of water tech is growing at what can seem an exponential rate, and the sector is an enthusiastic and innovative adopter of technologies such as AI and machine learning. According to the World Economic Forum, smart water is potentially a solution to issues including leak detection, water efficiency, energy efficiency, water quality improvements and more. Smart water technology provides a platform for more efficient technology use and more informed decision-making. Aquatech Online talked to Garry Tabor (Badger Meter), Alex Money (Watermarq), Andy Smith (Anglian Water Services), and Eric Bindler (Bluefield Research) to find out: What smart water is; what problems smart water solves; and what the smart water future looks like.
