Pushing innovation to its limits requires nerves, as well as cranes, of steel. For Carlos Camino Darcourt, Waterside Execution Manager at APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas, achieving the industry pinnacle of quad lifts – a first for Mexico – required carefully engineered plans and scrupulous attention to safety measures, but it also required him to convince colleagues from various disciplines that doing things differently would be worth it. At APM Terminals, we encourage innovative ideas and out of the box thinking and we promote working environments where good ideas are picked up – that’s how we continue to lift the standards. As Neidyr Curry, APM Terminals Head of Portfolio, Americas, Global Asset Management says: “Handling four containers at the same time is quite unique and poses many challenges that Lazaro Cardenas has overcome with their expertise. It is beautiful to see it happening, especially because this is a challenge that requires teamwork, from operations, asset management, but also HSSE, Planning, and Sea Liners – it’s a true joint effort.” Read more about Carlos’ – and team Lazaro Cardenas’ achievement: https://bit.ly/4d0vNKv Neidyr C.

News that the EU is to invest a record €7 billion in sustainable, safe and smart transport infrastructure, including shore power is welcome at our terminals in Sweden, Spain, Denmark and Croatia. The investments, hand in hand with our own in electrified equipment and renewable energy will: 💚 Reduce our own scope 3 emissions 🎯 Offer our customers a better product 🚢 Have direct influence on shipping lines’ scope 1 emissions ‘It is obvious that reaching Net Zero is not something we can do on our own as a terminal operator. All stakeholders in and around the ports have to contribute in the different steps of the energy supply chain,” says Peter Corfitsen, CEO, Rijeka Gateway, Croatia. “Therefore, support for the upgrade of the port in Rijeka is a big step ahead to deliver a lower emissions product for our customers, provide better air quality in and around the port and serve as a competitive port for Croatia,” he explains. 💚🌞🩴In putting our best foot forward for sustainability, we're 'putting the foot down' on waste by recycling used terminal tyres to transform into footwear. The APM Terminals' flip-flops save 7.5kg of CO2 emissions per pair. They were created as part of our global Go Green initiative by APM Terminals Apapa, who teamed up with Freee Recycle Limited to produce 2,000 pairs for our environmentally conscious colleagues.  It's just another small step toward our industry-leading Net Zero goals.  💚🌞🩴Read more about this story: https://bit.ly/4f7cvoj

APM Terminals is lifting environmental and safety standards in the transition to battery-electric container handling equipment. Last week, APM Terminals Port Elizabeth in New Jersey, USA, hosted a pivotal workshop that brought together the local fire services, equipment manufacturer MAFI Transport-Systeme GmbH and APM Terminals representatives from Port Elizabeth, the region, and headquarters. The objective was to ensure readiness for the safe deployment of new MAFI T 230e electric terminal tractors. Workshop topics ranged from the identification and mitigation of unique risks associated with battery-electric equipment to the creation of a detailed response plan for emergencies such as collisions or fires. “While the risk of a fire in battery-electric equipment is very low, understanding the risk and preparing thoroughly is crucial,” says Candice Pearce, Senior Program Manager for Operational Readiness of Battery-Electric Equipment. “Having collaborated with the manufacturer and local fire brigade, we are prepared to safely deploy the new equipment and transition to greener operations, benefiting our employees and the communities we serve.” In addition to the seven new terminal tractors at APM Terminals Port Elizabeth, APM Terminals is piloting 51 pieces of various types of electric container handling equipment at five other APM Terminal locations worldwide this year. Learnings from the workshop at APM Terminals Elizabeth will serve as input for global guidelines and guidance for other terminals piloting and deploying battery-electric assets. Ultimately, this is just one of many initiatives that will support the roll-out of electric equipment across our portfolio in the coming years. Read more: https://bit.ly/3y52qrg

With young people being celebrated globally as part of the United Nations World Youth Skills Day, APM Terminals is adding its voice – and resources – to the development of the next generation and to the emerging talents of tomorrow’s professionals. While APM Terminals provide many scholarship opportunities globally, and create training and development opportunities for many communities, it’s the individual stories that touch us the most. When APM Terminals Liberia announced it would provide scholarship funds to 120 students from six primary and secondary schools within Districts 13 and 14 of Montserrado County, it made many more than the students themselves happy. The activation, the fourth scholarship scheme organized by the terminal, wasn’t a ‘one-off’ gift. It was an investment in the future of entire communities, and it came from the heart. Just as all the work we do in the countries in which we operate are investments in progress, growth and toward improving lives for all. At the official presentation of scholarships last month, Saidu Kawah, a 6th Grader and a scholarship recipient said: “I am so happy to be a beneficiary of the APM Terminals Liberia scholarship because it will help me achieve my goals. I want to become a Medical Doctor so that I can help sick people feel better. With this scholarship, I will be able to stay in school and learn all the things I need to know to reach my dream. It makes me feel happy and confident to know that people believe in me and want to help me succeed.” This event brought together the APM Terminals Liberia team, scholarship students, parents, school administrators, and representatives from both districts in the vicinity of the Monrovia terminal. It was proof – and only one example – of our belief in the transformative power of education and our commitment to lift the standards of responsibility in our host nations. Our teams are proud to support the academic endeavors of brilliant young minds. #EducationForAll #CommunityEngagement #wysd #CorporateSustainability #APMTerminalsLiberia #ScholarshipProgramClay

When it comes to lifting the standard of efficiency for our customers, our only limit is safety. We constantly push innovation standards forward, as witnessed by the outstanding achievement at APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas where a multidisciplinary team has mastered the quad lift – the only terminal in Mexico to achieve the impressive, time and energy-saving feat. The well-being of marine life and ocean sustainability are directly linked to the health and efficiency of port operations. As a company, we seek to lift the standards of responsibility for our environment and to support and protect our neighbouring communities. Organisations that share our values get a firm ‘seal of approval’ from us, like the The Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) near to our Los Angeles Pier 400 terminal in the US. Dedicated to conservation, education, research and animal rescue, the MMCC has helped 10,000 flippered friends since 1992. Patients like Elmer, who was found separated from his mother, severely dehydrated and in dire need of help. Unlike the majority of MMCC patients, Elmer has not been released to open waters as he developed bilateral cataracts, rendering him blind and unable to fend for himself. But thanks to the MMCC, he was matched with two other blind sealions, with whom he has bonded and shares a permanent home with love and care 24/7. It’s a heart-lifting story, and it’s one which touches on our own heartfelt efforts to lift the standards of responsibility in our terminals and in our communities. As Jon Poelma, Managing Director of APM Terminals Los Angeles says: “Our ambition is to be the most environmentally responsible and sustainable container terminal operator on the US West Coast. “By protecting marine life, we help ensure the long-term health of our oceans, which in turn supports the maritime industry and coastal economies,” he added, announcing the $75,000 donation. Gateway Terminals India (GTI) has made the transition to become a renewable energy-powered container terminal. Last week the terminal, also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, switched to 80% renewable electricity with the commissioning of a new captive solar power plant. As well as raising the standards of environmental responsibility, the transition will lead to a 41% reduction in carbon emission per year. https://bit.ly/3S1XoTa #GatewayTerminalsIndia #GTI #JNPA #JNPort #Decarbonisation #EnergyTransition
