Lots of excitement at AMOLF. 💥 It's almost time for the annual Science Day (formerly Open Day) on Saturday, October 5th. New this year, our own 'kunst en kitsch' booth. Do you have items that may contain lead? Like vintage plates, printed beer glasses or vintage toys. Bring them to AMOLF! 💡 🔍 Have them examined for lead by Wim Noorduin and Lukas Helmbrecht. And a new mini lecture by Jeroen van Zon on his organoide work (mini intestines growing in the lab). Fascinating stuff! And of course lots of kids activities like the kids lecture 'wormen college' and 'wat is een nanodeeltje'. On September 19,  we had a great party for our people to celebrate 75 years of magical times at AMOLF. Many of our colleagues found really creative ways to reflect the ‘a touch of magic’ theme. Our PhD student Katrien van Riet (group of Johannes T. B. (Bas) Overvelde) is passionate about education and technology. At Eindhoven University of Technology she developed a toolkit for all age groups to work with prototype soft circuits that work on air instead of electricity. Fundamental research can lead to unexpected applications. A perfect example is spinoff Lumetallix, which started when group leader Wim Noorduin took some of his experiments home during Covid lock down. Who would have thought that experiments on lead-containing semiconductors leads to a test kit to detect lead that causes health problems .... And now they are contending for the Spinoff Prize 2024 😀 https://lnkd.in/gvQSYbEX
