Lots of excitement at AMOLF. 💥 It's almost time for the annual Science Day (formerly Open Day) on Saturday, October 5th. New this year, our own 'kunst en kitsch' booth. Do you have items that may contain lead? Like vintage plates, printed beer glasses or vintage toys. Bring them to AMOLF! 💡 🔍 Have them examined for lead by Wim Noorduin and Lukas Helmbrecht. And a new mini lecture by Jeroen van Zon on his organoide work (mini intestines growing in the lab). Fascinating stuff! And of course lots of kids activities like the kids lecture 'wormen college' and 'wat is een nanodeeltje'. Finally, not to be missed our super popular Hologram set-up producing your own hologram in space 😀 ⚡ Hope to see many of you 😀 AMOLF's activities are part of Wetenschapsdag Amsterdam Science Park .. https://lnkd.in/em_v6XKD Want to know more? On September 19, we had a great party for our people to celebrate 75 years of magical times at AMOLF. Many of our colleagues found really creative ways to reflect the ‘a touch of magic’ theme. You could clearly see what a warm and inclusive culture we have at AMOLF. And as you can tell from the photos, we had lots of fun! Shortly, we will also celebrate AMOLF’s birthday with our alumni and network members. Do you also want to get to know AMOLF? Then sign up for a special AMOLF tour at Science Day on October 5th at the Amsterdam Science Park: https://lnkd.in/ei7Etr_J

Our PhD student Katrien van Riet (group of Johannes T. B. (Bas) Overvelde) is passionate about education and technology. At Eindhoven University of Technology she developed a toolkit for all age groups to work with prototype soft circuits that work on air instead of electricity. And now she is competing for the TU/E Academic Award. Support Katrien by voting, using this link: https://lnkd.in/eAuC2pu3

Benieuwd? Kijk zijn presentatie hier: https://lnkd.in/ewBd37Tb

Fundamental research can lead to unexpected applications. A perfect example is spinoff Lumetallix, which started when group leader Wim Noorduin took some of his experiments home during Covid lock down. Who would have thought that experiments on lead-containing semiconductors leads to a test kit to detect lead that causes health problems .... And now they are contending for the Spinoff Prize 2024 😀 https://lnkd.in/gvQSYbEX

Congratulations Shibo with the Veni and all the best in taking next steps #softrobotics .... Hope to see you back at AMOLF as alumnus on October 3rd 😀
From greenhouses to operating theatres, soft robotics holds the promise to handle delicate objects with human-like dexterity and care in real-world environments. 👨🌾👩⚕️ Shibo Zou received a NWO Veni grant for his project Fluidic Sensing: Giving Soft Robots the Sense of Touch 🎉 Sensory feedback is crucial to achieve high autonomy. Fluidic sensing extracts feedback mechanically through the actuation pressure variation induced by shape change and can potentially bring the sense of touch to soft fluidic robots. However, this actuation pressure variation is currently too low for practical applications. “I aim to unravel the underlying mechanical design principles that can amplify the actuation pressure variation in fluidic sensing and translate these principles into multifunctional soft robotic devices for real-world applications”, says Zou.
