What a truly incredible evening at Woensdrecht we had for the AeroDelft Summer Event 2024! In many respects, it was the culmination of our year as a team and we couldn't be prouder with what we've been able to achieve and show off. The evening was packed with presentations, even featuring the first live demo ever performed by AeroDelft when the LH2 team completed a "hydration run", powering a propeller with gaseous hydrogen in front of the audience. There was also a fly over of a Sling 4 aircraft, perhaps an indication of what our aircraft (a modified Sling 4) may look like were it to fly at Woensdrecht Air Base...food for thought! A big thank you to those that made this event happen including the team and all of our partners. A special thank you to Fokker Services Group for the use of their hangar. And hugs to all our friends and family who were in attendance. Testbed update! The testbed is coming along great, with the powertrain being almost fully integrated. Thanks to our partner PowerCell Group the hydrogen fuel cell stack is looking better than ever. Besides the fuel cell stack, other components such as the DCHV-LP, the motor mounting structure, and the water separators have been added to the testbed. Our partnership with industry leading companies like PowerCell has empowered us to incorporate top-of-the-line technology into our powertrain design. This advancement accelerates our design process and facilitates us with realizing our goal of hydrogen-powered aviation. Recently, the team had the unique opportunity to present and discuss the achievements and remaining challenges of the creating of a hydrogen powered aircraft with experts in the field together with our partners at Airbus. After touring to the Hamburg production facility, we spent roughly 4 hours discussing and brainstorming solutions to some of the technical challenges that still remain for our aircraft. The session was highly productive and we are grateful for the time afforded to us by Airbus. Members of the ZEROe team were also present and it was highly insightful to hear the similarities between some of the issue we face. In the beginning of June, we had the chance to go to ILA Berlin 2024. With the help of our partner JOMEC, we were able to go to this year's airshow in Berlin. The event was huge and we were lucky that the weather was very nice. Not only were there a lot of stands with interesting companies, there were also demonstrations and a lot of aircraft. This is something AeroDelft of course absolutely loves. A great memory to look back to as this year comes to an end. Engineering Update! We’re making excellent progress on both our high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) systems! They are now complete, and we’ve organized the CAN buses on the chipboard as a platform to size the wires precisely as they will be in the testbed and aircraft. We are beginning to mount components onto the testbed and integrate the wire harnesses. We’re thrilled to share that our recent LN2 boiler test was a complete success! Last week, the LH2 department started the testing with the tank being filled up with liquid nitrogen to 60% of its capacity. This allowed us to calculate the heat getting into the tank by the liquid nitrogen boiling off. To do this, the tank was placed on a scale to monitor the mass flow out of the tank. Once this was done, the heating element was lowered into the tank to be tested for an impressive 2kW of power. The next steps include testing the heating element for 6kW of power and adding a new stainless steel lid with safety valves to be able to safely pressurize the tank. This will allow us to explore different heat exchanger setups and control systems under cryogenic conditions.
