There are many interesting facts about the #BlackSoldierFly. 🐛 🐛 🐛 read here: https://lnkd.in/e2eXQ7Tm There is one that I particularly like to explain: The flies don't need to eat anything. They actually don't even have any chewing mouthparts. They only drink. This is because they rely on the fats stored during the larval stage. This fact helps people to understand that the flies don't bite, they don't have a stinger neither! This makes encounters with them harmless. Like in this "love room" - video that I captured at Chanzi farm in Dar es Salaam recently, showcasing thousands of flies mating and laying eggs inside the "eggies" located near the attractant - decaying organic matter. I'll explain more later. watch this space. This is a very good report by GAIA/BFFP. Before planning for #plastic treatment facilites, it is worth that we re-explore the alternatives that has been around for ages, before plastic came in to #Africa and bring them back to our daily lives. They are totally feasible, and preferable by consumers. There are lots of good examples. This report, titled "The Life before Plastic: Demonstrating Traditional Practices of Reuse in Africa," investigates the issue of plastic pollution on the continent. It examines the legislative frameworks, policies, and international agreements established to govern the management and trade of plastic waste. More significantly, the publication highlights traditional practices across Africa that utilize natural materials as substitutes for plastic. Additionally, members of GAIA and BFFP Africa contribute insights into existing reuse and refill systems on the continent. They explore ways to integrate reuse and refill more effectively into Africa's efforts to combat plastic pollution. Ultimately, "The Life Before Plastic" explores the sustainability of current and traditional #ZeroWaste systems. Globally, we are witnessing the triple planetary crisis today (climate change - loss in biodiversity and growing pollution - increasing waste) and it is here to stay! Unfortunately, our rising consumption (or overconsumption) of natural resources - being finite in nature - is one of the primary factors aggravating this problem. According to the latest Global Resource Outlook by UNEP - International Resource Panel (IRP), material use has increased over 3 times in the last 50 years. It’s impact continues to grow even more than the overall rise in the global well being. Therefore it is the right time to implement some real #circulareconomy solutions for reversing this trend. After-all sustainable living has now become a necessity than just being left a choice. In this first Medium blog, Piotr Barczak and I deep dive into what exactly circular economy means for us as we explore solutions for optimised resource consumption. Sensitization, capacity building and healthy knowledge exchanges are key imperatives that could contribute towards implementing circular economy solutions in different ways. Où se situe la Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮 en termes d’économie circulaire ? L’économie circulaire est un modèle économique novateur qui vise à réduire le gaspillage des énergies et des ressources, à rallonger la durée d’usage des biens de consommation et à redonner une nouvelle vie aux déchets ♻️. En 2022, Monsieur le Premier Ministre Beugré Mambé, à l’époque Ministre Gouverneur, annonçait la mise en place d’initiatives concrètes en lien avec l’économie circulaire : 👉🏽 Site pilote à Abobo : dédié à la valorisation des bio-déchets permettant de transformer les déchets organiques 🚮 en ressources utiles comme le compost ou le biogaz, avec par exemple la ferme école qui réalise un élevage de mouches soldats noires afin de réduire les déchets organiques, limiter le gaspillage alimentaire et révolutionner le marché de l'alimentation animale. 👉🏽 Le laboratoire central d’innovation 🔬: lancé récemment par le Ministre de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique, Adama Diawara, est une initiative du Centre d'excellence africain pour la valorisation des déchets (CEA-Valopro), basé à l'Institut National Polytechnique Félix HOUPHOUËT-BOIGNY de Yamoussoukro (INP-HB) Officiel. 👉🏽 Sensibilisation des élèves 👩🏽🎓🧑🏿🎓 : pour informer les jeunes sur les enjeux de l’économie circulaire, les incitant à adopter des pratiques éco-responsables dès le plus jeune âge. Le projet se nomme TEECO (Territoires Engagés pour une Économie Circulaire Opérationnelle) et est piloté par Institut de l'Economie Circulaire d'Abidjan-IECA (IECA) en partenariat avec les acteurs au développement de l’île de France et l’AFD - Agence Française de Développement L’économie circulaire joue également un rôle crucial dans la redynamisation de l’agriculture ivoirienne 🌾. En valorisant les déchets agricoles et en utilisant des techniques durables, ce modèle contribue à une agriculture 🚜 plus écologique et productive. En somme, l’économie circulaire en Côte d'Ivoire représente un modèle d’avenir prometteur, capable de transformer les défis environnementaux en opportunités économiques et professionnelles 🎯.
