Our 52impact intern, Sandra Kosgei presented her findings on “how satellite imagery assesses #biodiversity in Dune habitats in the Natura 2000 areas” of the #Netherlands yesterday! Her work focused on understanding which biodiversity metrics provide the most reliable indicators for assessing biodiversity in the dune ecosystem, and which satellite-based indices correlate most to biodiversity metrics. In the Netherlands, dune habitats within the #Natura 2000 network are protected areas that support unique biodiversity and act as natural barriers against #coastal #erosion. These #habitats are crucial for the conservation of rare species and provide essential ecosystem services, such as groundwater recharge and protection from sea-level rise. 🌊 The objective was to assess which #satellite-based indices, such as normalized difference #vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), #soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and leaf area index (LAI), correlate most to biodiversity #metrics (i.e., species richness and species diversity) Some of her findings include: 🌳 LAI and NDVI showed relatively higher correlations in comparison with EVI and SAVI across multiple years, suggesting they might be more robust predictors for biodiversity metrics in dune ecosystems. 📈📉 Correlations were positive or negative depending on the location of sample data and the year/season suggesting a more complex relationship. 💡 This project is important because monitoring and reporting on biodiversity for Natura 2000 areas is necessary and establishing relationships between spectral variability and biodiversity metrics over larger areas enhances the ability to assess diversity Sandra’s passion for #biodiversity, #water, and #climate has made her an exceptional asset to our 52impact team & it has been wonderful learning from her findings! Thank you so much for being such a positive addition to our team over the last few months.... 😊 #Internship #52impact #Biodiversity #SatelliteData #RemoteSensing #Strategy #Data #Technology

Biodiversity is an international issue, and one that requires a united front at the global level to tackle. 🌍🌳 As highlighted by the SWI swissinfo.ch , Switzerland, a nation once known as a haven of pristine nature, is now increasingly at odds with reality. Biodiversity loss in the #Alpine country is now above the world average, with over a third of its animal and plant species endangered. This troubling trend, as reported by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, poses a significant threat to prosperity and quality of life. The graph below additionally highlights the 30% increase in #constructedareas since the 1980's... At 52impact, we believe that reversing biodiversity loss requires #innovative solutions. Our "End-to-end" transition expertise with satellite data is a crucial tool in tackling these challenges. By leveraging our geospatial technology & service, we provide comprehensive insights into #protectedareas, the impacts of urban sprawl, and the pressures from intensive agriculture. This allows us to develop targeted strategies to restore natural habitats and promote #sustainable #landuse. Why 52impact's Satellite Capabilities Matter: 🌲Comprehensive Monitoring: Track changes in land use, vegetation, and water bodies. ☀ Early Detection: Identify and manage threats like invasive species and habitat fragmentation. ↗ Informed Decision Making: Provide data-driven recommendations for conservation efforts. #Biodiversity #Sustainability #EndtoEnd #Transition #EnvironmentalProtection #52impact #Journey #Switzerland #World

In Egypt today, two critical factors caused by climate change include 1.) water scarcity 🌊 and 2.) extreme heat.🔥 Our Data Scientist, David Modiano, in collaboration with the NSO - Netherlands Space Office & eLEAF & the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt for the Geodata Demonstrators project, allowed David to showcase some examples of work 52impact is doing across Egypt. The map below showcases the annual #precipitation focusing on the locations of several orange farms in the region. To stay prepared against the impacts of climate change, #smallholderfarmers can utilize this type of information to track critical #growing seasonal calendars for their orange growth. Crop-specific water needs are also assessed in order to inform farmers about the irrigation requirements of their crops, allowing for effective mitigation strategies to be implemented. 🍊 The maps also showcases changes in temperature historically and into the future until 2050. #Temperature is an important parameter to map for smallholder farmers to similarly understand how crops such as oranges can survive and perform based on seasonal and yearly temperatures. This information is also important for preparedness for farmers in staying proactive to the changing climate and extreme heat. ☀ These models serve as examples for how 52impact works on tracking precipitation and extreme heat (among other parameters such as droughts & flooding), while providing in-depth analyses for farmers and agricultural organizations on mitigation opportunities. 🌎 Questions or interested in learning more? 52impact is excited to introduce Sandra Kosgei our newest intern for the summer! To introduce her, we conducted a small interview to share an inside look at how 52impact works with our #interns. --- 🌳 What are your day-to-day tasks across #52impact? My internship is focused on linking #biodiversity indices with satellite indices. The goal of my work is to establish the relationship between biodiversity indices and vegetation indices derived from satellite imagery. 🌞 What are you enjoying most about your internship? For me, biodiversity is a relatively new topic, and I have been enjoying learning more about it. I am also enjoying the #opportunity of developing and applying practical skills in this new domain. The internship allows for independence but with a lot of support allowing for personal and #professional growth 💡 Why are biodiversity and #satellite data important to clients? If you can relate biodiversity to the relationship with satellite indices, you can predict what to expect such as drought among other challenges. For example, my research is specific to the #Dune areas in the #Netherlands. If a strong correlation is established, it suggests that #vegetation indices can be used to estimate biodiversity levels across large areas for dune ecosystems. 🌎 What is your take aways of working at 52impact? When I was looking for #internships, I wanted to explore how #spatial data can fit into corporate settings. I love that the company is focused on growing, international, and passionate about the team is in making a positive difference! It was also exciting to see that 52impact’s work can be #global. --- Sandra is a second-year student at the Universiteit Twente, currently doing her masters in Spatial engineering. She has a passion for leveraging geoinformation to address #complex #societal issues, and has been an great asset to our team! Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] for any interest in internships. 😊
