Yazid Salahudeen Mikail is a multifaceted leader carving a path at the intersection of data and environmental action. With over five years of professional experience, his expertise spans data science, storytelling, policy advocacy, and international development. This diverse skillset fuels his commitment to tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development goals.
Yazid currently volunteers as a core team member with Climate Change Al, a global non-profit that catalyzes impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. He also works with The Ashley Lashley Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Barbados working on the intersection between climate change and health as the Healthy Environmentally-Friendly Youth (HEY) Campaign Coordinator. Leading the campaign's implementation and advocacy efforts across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Prior to his current endeavors, Yazid served as a data value advocate at the UN Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. There, he championed the utilization of data to achieve the UN's ambitious goals, aiming to improve lives, address inequality, and promote environmental sustainability. Additionally, his dedication to youth empowerment led him to become a youth advisor on the Iris Project's advisory board. Working alongside fellow advisors from around the world, he mobilized young people and secured funding of up to $120,000 for their nature restoration. He also led the development of the first Africa Youth Climate Action Plan (AYCAP), an action plan co-created by young people from across Africa outlining the key priorities for climate action in Africa and youth and government policymakers' roles.
Yazid has professional certifications from Google and IBM in Data Science, Cornell University in Environmental Education and Community Engagement, and Project Management from the University of Virginia. Beyond certifications, Yazid actively participates in renowned fellowships focused on climate change, civic engagement, and data science. The Oxford School of Climate Change Fellowship, Civic Change Makers Fellowship, Solving Public Problems Accelerator Program, Climate Democracy Action Program, and YALI RLC Fellowship are just a few examples of his dedication to expanding his knowledge and network for the betterment of the planet.

What are some ways to build confidence as a mentor?
Build Mutually Accountable Relationship with Altruism and Compassion. Well, most of the contributions are valid. Just to add, one of the things I have incorporated as a mentor and when incorporated for me as a mentee I found useful and helps build confidence is mutual accountability between both mentor and mentee. We all love to listen and advise our mentees. Or get update about them, their next move and so much more. It all sounds good and great way to know how you can be of help. However, sharing a little bit about yourself, what you’re up to and probably your challenges as well (knowing that you’re not all perfect & can be vulnerable sometimes) contributes hugely to building trust and confidence. I’m excited to share, that helps too!

Title: Gender and Climate Change Adaptation in Kenya Sub Title: An Assessment of the impacts of climate change and the role of gender on adaptation strategies in semi-arid and sub-humid regions of Kenya by Jokastah Kalungu The above study was facilitated by CALESA Project and Manchester Metropolitan University almost a decade ago (2015) and supervised by PROF. WALTER LEAL FILHO and DR. DAVID HARRIS The project was done under CALESA Project, using temperature analogue approach. The idea of this approach is to connect a particular location with places that have climates similar (analogous) to what scientists expect the climate will be like in that location at a given time in future due to climate changes. It was noted that Climate change and variability was a major threat to sustainable development across the globe. Paradoxically, human beings to a great extend contribute to the spread and also hold the key to effective management of climate change and variability. Extract Global climate models (IPCC AR4 global model projections) predict a 40 percent increase of rainfall in Northern Kenya by 2100 with more intense rains during the wet seasons (Downing,2008). This means that floods are likely to be more common and severe (Awuor et al., 2008)even though increase of rainfall presents rainwater harvesting opportunity for agricultural use. Rainfall variability within the year has increased in Nairobi area (GoK, 2010). More on floods prediction is covered within the study, summary of adaptation and Mitigation will be highlighted. The pathway to achieving the Net-zero Carbon Emissions and Climate resilience 2050 especially in Africa is in #ActivelyEngaging young people at #AllLevels to ensure that * Active participation in climate action endeavours to have Resource persons for the next generation. * we have knowledgeable young actors engaging in every of the 20% of the 20 sectors in economy. * we can stand heads and shoulders and achieve with the rest of the world. Mindful of the fact that, we are the youngest continent with over 75% of our 1.3billion pop below 30. This means in 25years from now, our African Gen Zs and Gen Alphas will be in their rubies and golden years. Be it nature-base solutions or human ingenuity, encouraging young people to build interest in #climateActions at all levels is key. The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice - NSSCJ (one of Pan African Climate Justice Alliance-PACJA initiatives) is an intergenerational initiative conceptualized to share, learn, and network disruptive ideas that are needed to catalyze economy-wide transformation in a climate-catastrophic world. The school offers tailor-made course modules by leading Climate Justice strategists and activists. It is designed to provide a timely opportunity for long-standing scholar-activists, community-based scholars, and the younger generation of climate justice advocates and practitioners from the Global South and North. The school adopts a society-wide focus, targeting sectoral and thematic experts and frontline activists irrespective of formal education and cultural backgrounds. The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice has successfully delivered three Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice Cohorts (Cohort I -2021, Cohort III -2022, and Cohort – III 2023), it has so far trained over 1000 participants drawn from the Global South regions including Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean, who are not enough, considering Africa’s current population and the critical mass we would like to build. This year, actually happening from the 23rd of June to the 7th of July, 2024, the Cohort IV edition will be running, alongside pertinent side events, from Chuka University, the Mount Kenya region of Kenya. As the MEAL lead for PACJA, I am delighted to share some of the quantitative results of this auspicious initiative below: 1. Most applicants are in the 18-25 and 26-30 age brackets. The program is particularly appealing to younger individuals, indicating that it meets the needs and interests of early-career professionals and recent graduates. 2. There is a steady increase in the number of countries participating in the program from 48 countries in cohort II to 87 in cohort IV. This shows there is an increased interest in climate change and conversations about justice. More countries are taking the lead in matters of climate change. 3. In its initial call for applications, the program received 748 applications for Cohort 2. The participants' enthusiasm and positive feedback fueled further interest, leading to 2025 applications for Cohort 3, and in Cohort 4, the number of applicants had more than doubled to an impressive 4441. This steady increase underscores the program’s reputation and its critical role in equipping participants with the skills and knowledge to tackle climate change. 4. The program's commitment to inclusivity is evident in the gender distribution data.
