Today, 5th October, is World Teachers’ Day, a global moment to celebrate the importance of teachers and the amazing work they do. Equally, it is a day to reflect on the support teachers need to fully deploy their talent and vocation and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally. This year’s theme is “Valuing teacher voices: Towards a new social contract for education" At Sydani Institute for Research and Innovation (SIRI),  Sydani Group, we recognize the centrality of teachers to strong education systems and learning. We advocate for teachers to be engaged actors in education planning, and policymaking- a mix of town and gown approach to systems thinking. With this understanding, we are currently partnering with several development partners to improve the efficiency of teachers in Nigeria. I had an amazing time last week training the Sydani Group team on mastering the art of thought leadership in international development. “Vaccines cause deformity and infertility" – Someone who knows nothing about how vaccines work and the number of lives it has saved. I have had an exciting couple of months working with the incredible team at Sydani Group, contributing to the routinization of the HPV vaccine. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Fubara Grace, Stallone Aondover Ngobua, Moyosore Oloruntoyin, Chukwudinma Okoh, and Al-Mustapha M. as we worked on ensuring the routine acceptance of the HPV vaccine across various states. While myths about vaccines exist and contribute to vaccine hesitancy, they also contribute to an increase in the number of vaccine-preventable deaths. Here are 5 key things you can do to reduce myths and hesitancy about vaccination in your community: 1️⃣ Share accurate information about the vaccine (it is very important that you share verified information, so ensure that you fact-check every piece of information) 2️⃣ Address concerns about vaccines with empathy 3️⃣ Engage trusted community leaders 4️⃣ Promote success stories 5️⃣ Make vaccines easily accessible by communicating the centers where they can be taken Note: There are cases of adverse reaction resulting from vaccination (they are called AEFI - Adverse Event Following Immunization), it is important to understand that these are rare and vaccines do not cause any form of biological harm, deformities or result in infertility. Healthcare professionals are highly trained to manage AEFI cases, ensuring that the safety of individuals is always a priority. The Sydani Institute for Research and Innovation (SIRI) recently concluded the first edition of its comprehensive capacity-building initiative, the Data Mastery Training Program, which catered to data enthusiasts and professionals across a variety of sectors. This specialized training was meticulously crafted to empower participants with advanced skills in data analytics and data-driven decision-making, equipping them to apply these competencies in their respective fields. The program attracted participants from diverse industries, including public health, international development, and academia, underscoring its wide-reaching relevance.   Spanning five days, from September 2nd to September 6th, the program provided an in-depth exploration of key data analytics concepts. Participants were immersed in the foundational principles of statistics and research methodologies, focusing on sampling techniques and accurate sample size determination. With the program’s emphasis on using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), attendees gained hands-on experience in data transformation and performing both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses.   The training sessions were a combination of theory and practical exercises, ensuring that participants understood statistical concepts and mastered their real-world applications.
