Contract Signing Ceremony of the 40 MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Project The Otjikoto 40 MW Biomass Project is the first of its kind generation project in Namibia, which will see the development of a biomass power station near the Otjikoto substation in Tsumeb. NamPower is the project’s Executing Agency, which is being funded by the French Development Agency, The Mitigation Action Facility, and the Government of Namibia. The commercial operation date of the power station is set to be in 2026. Today, 24 May 2024, NamPower celebrated the official kick-start of the execution phase of the the 40 MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Station Project (OBPS), as the company signed the following contract agreements: • An Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Agreement with DongFang Electric International Corporation (DEC) • Long-Term Woodchip Supply Agreements with four suppliers, namely: - Sactos Investment CC, PHP Interactive Information Technology Solutions CC, Forestry Plant and Equipment Sales CC, JV - Nexus Civils (Pty) Ltd, Africa Biomass Company (Pty) Ltd, JV - Ultra Trading CC, Special Supermarket (Pty) Ltd, JV - Omuriro Biomass Investments (Pty) Ltd, and the Transworld Cargo (Pty) Ltd., JV • The Financing Loan Agreement with The Agence Française de Développement (AfD) – who have facilitated a loan of up to 100 million EURO for the construction and bringing into operation of the power station. The 40MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Station (OBPS) will contribute positively to the Namibian economy, allowing Namibia to generate base load electricity from its own indigenous resources sourced by local farmers and contractors. The power station will enable NamPower to cost-effectively provide baseload electricity, through operating 24 hours a day and will contribute to the expansion of power generation for the country. In addition, the Project is an integral part of The National Strategy on the Sustainable Management of Bush Resources, which aims to combat bush encroachment and advocates for the restoration of savannahs through sustainable bush thinning practices. The project is guaranteed to make a lasting impact on the local farming and agricultural communities as Namibia is challenged by massive bush encroachment that affects over 26 million hectares of farmland, leading to billions of economic losses.

Today, NamPower proudly celebrated yet another milestone achievement with the inauguration of its newly constructed Auas-Gerus 400 kV transmission line. The 287 km line, which runs from Auas transmission station outside of Windhoek until Gerus transmission station near Otjiwarongo, is a strategic and crucial investment towards Namibia’s electricity transmission network, as it will allow NamPower to maintain pace with the evolving and increasing electricity needs of the country. The Auas-Gerus transmission line project is valued at over N$ 870 million, funded from NamPower’s balance sheet. Additionally, and true to NamPower’s ambition to maintain the national transmission grid at world-class standards, NamPower has installed 420 kV Air Core High Voltage Shunt Reactors (HVSRs) at Auas transmission station, Gerus transmission station and Kunene transmission station near Ruacana. These are the first ever Air Core High Voltage Shunt Reactors to be installed in Africa, and second only to Germany worldwide. Shunt reactors are used in substations to limit over voltages or prevent excessive voltage levels caused by incoming high voltage overhead transmission lines. NamPower takes pride in its world-class transmission system and vows to continue investing in Namibia in pursuit of its core mandate, that of ensuring securing of supply.

Today, 22 February, the NamPower family gathered to honour our late President, Dr Hage G. Geingob, at a commemoration ceremony held at the NamPower Convention Centre.   Speaking at the gathering, the Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu, described the late President as a true statesman who dedicated his entire life towards serving Namibia. “He has always been supportive of the development of the electricity supply industry. With his vision to see the access of electricity extended to all corners of the country, we at NamPower vow to honour the late President’s legacy through accelerating projects initiated during his reign, which will ensure continued security of electricity supply for our country”.   NamPower will forever fondly remember a gallant and brave leader, who never wavered even in difficult times, and continued to steer the Namibian house forward until the very end - as by his pledge.   May the soul of our dear late President, rest in eternal peace.
