Malaysia Takes Bold Steps to Strengthen GBV Response: Evidence-Based, Inclusive, and Survivor-Centered! What an incredible meeting last week, where representatives of different ministries across the Government of Malaysia and UN agencies united to strengthen their integrated multi-sectoral response to gender-based violence (GBV)! Malaysia’s commitment to combat GBV is stronger than ever, guided by the principles of inclusivity, security, trust and compassion of “Malaysia Madani” and the UN's promise to “leave no one behind”. Commissioned by UNFPA, UNU-IIGH’s study captured real experiences from GBV survivors, revealing critical barriers and needs in support services. Through extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including CSOs and health service providers these findings are strengthened, creating a clear path to reinforce Malaysia’s pioneering One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) model. This collaboration marks a powerful step forward in ensuring tailored, survivor-centered support across the nation. Key Insights: 1️. One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Each survivor’s journey is unique; our approach must address the intersectionality in gender/diverse needs. 2️. Rights and Agency First: Informed consent and choice are essential, placing survivors at the center of their recovery is a must. 3️. Long-Term Support Matters: Support must go beyond crisis intervention—recovery demands ongoing care, especially for mental health support. 4. Data for Policy and Accountability: A centralized digital system with rapid data analytics ensuring transparent monitoring, quick response, and accountability in every GBV case. 5. Centralized Governance: An oversight body unifies implementation efforts, mandates training, and builds trust through effective, survivor-centered policies. 4️. From Vision to Action: Great plans need strong execution to bring true impact. Malaysia is building a future where GBV response is fully realized—focused on preventing, protecting, and responding effectively on the frontline and throughout the life course. As the 16 Days of Activism approaches, it’s time to amplify these powerful efforts. We hosted our African Community of Practice on Gender and Health webinar: What Does a Gender-Just Climate Transition Mean for Health Systems in Africa? The webinar featured a powerful discussion on the intersection of climate justice, gender and health. 🔑 Key Insights from the Webinar: 1️. A gender-just transition requires addressing the structural economic, social, and political drivers of inequity that exacerbate climate change impact on women. 2️. Merely shifting energy sources without tackling systemic injustices in the economic, social and political spheres will not solve the climate crisis or advance gender equality. 3️. Investments in water, food, and human security, alongside local knowledge and community-specific solutions, are critical for a gender-just transition. 4. Redistributive justice, dignified jobs, removal of gender-based barriers, and valuing care work are essential principles of a gender-just transition.
