Today marks the ten-year anniversary of the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight #MH17 over eastern Ukraine, while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The flight, carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew members, included 196 Dutch nationals.
In the aftermath the government set three priorities: repatriating and identifying the victims, establishing the cause of the crash and conducting a criminal investigation. The Netherlands remains committed to establishing the truth of what happened, achieving justice for all 298 victims and their families, and holding those responsible to account. The government is pursuing these aims in two sets of international legal proceedings: the Netherlands’ inter-state application against the Russian Federation at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the proceedings launched by the Netherlands and Australia against the Russian Federation at the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO Council). These cases will take time and require patience. A number of major steps were taken this year. On 12 June a hearing was held at the ECtHR, and on 18 and 20 June a hearing was held before the ICAO Council, both hearings concerned the merits of the cases against the Russian Federation.
Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Ukraine reaffirm their dedication to achieving justice and accountability for the victims of Flight MH17 and their loved ones, ensuring that everything possible is done to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Each year on 17 July, the MH17 Aviation Disaster Foundation organizes a commemorative ceremony for the next of kin at the National MH17 Monument in Vijfhuizen. This year’s ceremony will be particularly poignant as it marks the tenth anniversary of the downing of MH17, featuring a more extensive guest list from both the Netherlands and abroad. The ceremony will be shown live on https://www.nos.nl/live, the Dutch national broadcaster, from 1:40pm – 3:40pm CET. The livestream can also be viewed on https://www.mh17.org/. During the ceremony at 3:18pm CET, the moment when the MH17 got shot, a two-minutes silence is observed to remember those who died.
The government recognizes that this ceremony may evoke deep emotions, and it extends its heartfelt sympathy to the next of kin and all those who were directly affected by the MH17 disaster.
