Thank you Elizabeth Segran, Ph.D. for the GANNI feature on Fast Company. Elizabeth's article captures our journey, the core values and the strategies that drive our commitment to more responsible fashion. We are honored to be featured in Fast Company. While I often talk about how degrowth is the answer to many of our problems in the fashion industry, I recently sat down with Nicolaj and Ditte Reffstrup, the cofounders of Ganni A/S, who offered me another perspective. Degrowth is a great idea, they say, but in practice investors will stay away from brands that don’t have a viable plan for growth — and degrowth brands will struggle to compete in the market economy. This will make it impossible to steal market share from real polluters like Shein, that are growing at record pace. Their solution instead is to be obsessive about building an environmentally responsible business. Six years ago, they developed an ambitious 44 point checklist of things to tackle including 👗Decarbonizing 👖Replacing toxic dyes in the supply chain with nontoxic alternatives (with one pair of boots, this was impossible, so Ganni simply stopped making them and lost $500,000 in revenue.) 👚Investing in new material startups that are significantly better for the environment Importantly, the LVMH-backed private equity firm L Catterton acquired a majority stake in Ganni, while allowing the brand to invest a significant chunk of its revenue into sustainability initiatives. Now it is scaling fast, edging out less sustainable brands. The fashion industry is overproducing at mind blowing rates. How we do stop this flood of clothes that is consuming valuable resources, spewing carbon into the atmosphere, and ending up in landfills? I’m not sure. Perhaps we need many different solutions. Whatever the case, I support businesses that are committed to reducing their impact as much as humanly possible.

We are building a movement of inspiring designers! Celium™ by Polybion is a customizable bio-textile that might well become the new gold standard for fashion, footwear, sportswear, and automotive applications. It is a natural material made of cellulose, cultivated with bacteria that consume agricultural waste. Every year, 23 billion square feet of leather and plastic alternatives are produced globally. With the mango waste in Mexico alone, Polybion could produce an alternative for about 50% of the world's leather supply. With the Secrid Impact Fund, we choose to support talented designers. Polybion is one of the winners of the #RedesignEverythingChallenge by What Design Can Do. As a global partner, Secrid provides three winners with additional support. We spoke to the co-founders of Polybion: Axel Gómez-Ortigoza Aguirre and Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza (a.k.a. the GO-brothers). Exactly one week ago, I had the privilege of being part of the 12th edition of What Design Can Do Amsterdam Live, an event full of energy, innovation, and a lots of design. We were able to see how everything needs to be redesigned with 11 incredible winning projects from our Redesign Everything Challenge around the world, which showed us through impeccable 3-minute pitches what design can do for our planet. One project, in particular, filled me with pride: Celium by Polybion, by the admired brothers Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza and Axel Gómez-Ortigoza Aguirre, from Irapuato, Mexico, who showed us how design, collaboration, circularity and biology are the future of our civilization. In addition to these incredible presentations, we had the privilege of hearing inspiring talks from people I admire greatly, such as Edel Rodriguez, Clive Russell from Extinction Rebellion, Samar Maakaroun, partner at Pentagram London, Bobby Kolade from BUZIGAHILL of Kampala, Natsai Audrey Chieza from Faber Futures and many other creative and inspiring minds. This is the third year we have been part of the Bootcamp with the winning projects as part of our global alliance with WDCD and the country partners. Next stop: What Design Can Do México GNP 2024 on September 27 at the Auditorio BB in Mexico City! Tickets on sale very soon!
