“Everybody’s gunning for the VIP section,” sings Simon Le Bon on the title song here; it's a line that works as a metaphorical nod to Duran Duran’s ’80s heyday. This clever, Mark Ronson–produced album (the band’s 13th) finds Duran Duran bottlenecking what made them great (those moments of songwriting that matched sing-along melodies with self-deprecating wordplay) while adding hard-won musical and lyrical wisdom to show they're living in the present. There's disco-bubblegum nihilism (“Blame the Machines”), throwback irony (“Girl Panic!”), and an age-appropriate ballad (“Leave a Light On”) that are all about making it home safely after the party has faded.
