Essential Albums
- The individual talents of the members of Lady Antebellum were tightly intertwined from the start, but on their third album, the trio seem to be a single entity. Sure, Charles, Hillary and Dave each have a unique musical personality, but from their seamless swapping of lines on the tender, romantic “Just a Kiss” to the sweetly soulful harmonies on the R&B-tinged “Singing Me Home", the threesome truly work together here. And cinematic tracks such as “As You Turn Away” prove nobody does dynamic power ballads better.
- Shattering the boundaries between pure pop, heartland rock and contemporary country, the songs on Lady Antebellum’s second album are full of big, bold melodies that inscribe themselves permanently on your heart. The simpatico songwriting and heaven-sent harmonies of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood yield the emotion-soaked, panoramic pop of the title track, the earthy Americana of “American Honey” and roughneck riff-rocker “Stars Tonight” without missing a step. Each moment feels like the most important one of Lady A’s lives.
- With one foot planted in the warm tones of '70s Southern rock and the other tapping to catchy country pop, the music of Georgia trio Lady Antebellum sounds both familiar and new. Its 2008 eponymous album is an impressive debut—especially since the members write their own songs. “Love Don’t Live Here” opens with Charlie Kelley’s throaty voice recalling a young Eddie Vedder, until Hillary Scott’s honeyed inflections smooth out the edges, creating sunny harmonies. The uplifting follower, “Lookin’ for a Good Time,” better zeroes in on their vocal chemistry. Separated, they make for an engaging call-and-response duet, while together they have harmonious moments so close that at times you’d swear they were siblings. Holding all this together is Dave Haywood’s adroit musicianship. He plays, picks, and bends with the immediate energy of someone taught on the road. In the bouncy “Love’s Lookin’ Good on You,” Haywood’s rootsy riffs give the song more strut than the rhythm section. Then his delicate acoustic fingerpicking in “Can’t Take My Eyes off You” plays as light and feathered as Scott’s lead vocals.

About Lady A
There’s no better illustration of Lady A's captivating, chart-dominating chemistry than their colossal hit “Need You Now”, a smouldering anthem of late-night redemption that balances meticulous musical craftsmanship, glittering pop savvy and emotional gravitas. It’s a formula that propelled Hillary Scott, Charles Kelly and Dave Haywood—who were formerly known as Lady Antebellum, but changed their name in 2020 because of its associations with slavery—to megastardom. The trio formed after a few songwriting sessions in 2006, then connected with veteran producers Victoria Shaw (of Garth Brooks) and Paul Worley (of the Dixie Chicks) for their self-titled full-length in 2008. People took immediate notice of their brand of good-time country-pop, as well as their rare lineup of one woman and two men, netting them the first-ever debut album to top Billboard country charts. But it was “Need You Now”, their lead single from the follow-up of the same name, that minted Lady A as superstars. With richly harmonised hooks, pristine production and earnest storytelling, the group became a soulful staple of country and rock radio for most of the 2010s. After a short hiatus in 2015 that saw solo projects from Scott and Kelley, they reunited two years later with a long-running Las Vegas residency and a string of ambitious releases that continued to blur the lines between country and contemporary pop.
