Amaarae

Singer-songwriter and producer Amaarae masterfully weaves Afropop with R&B and hip-hop, layering her breathy vocals over sensual, undulating beats. Born Ama Serwah Genfi in The Bronx in 1994, the artist was raised in Ghana, Atlanta and New Jersey. Musically inclined from a young age, Amaarae was influenced early on by musicians like super-producer Ryan Leslie. She went to university in Atlanta, immersing herself in the city’s cultural flavours until she graduated in 2017, at which point she returned to Ghana. That year, she released her debut EP, Passionfruit Summers, a textured, colourful preview of her future works. In 2020, Amaarae dropped her breakthrough album, THE ANGEL YOU DON’T KNOW, highlighted by the viral hit “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY”, which featured fellow Ghanaian artist Moliy, with Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis on its remix. Amaarae’s 2023 follow-up, Fountain Baby, saw the artist further exploring varied subgenres on songs like the experimental “Angels in Tibet”.
