About Kansas
Prog-rock band Kansas—whose founding members all hailed from the state—first came together in 1970, shuffling through multiple lineups before releasing their self-titled debut LP in 1974. ∙ Extensive touring made Kansas a cult favorite, but the band broke through to a mass audience with 1976’s Leftoverture, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Album chart. ∙ “Carry On Wayward Son,” their first major hit, is still one of the most-played songs on classic rock radio and became the defacto theme song for the long running TV show Supernatural. ∙ “Dust in the Wind”—a last-minute addition to their 1977 LP, Point of Know Return—hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, their only single to crack the US Top 10. ∙ Kansas’ 1998 LP, Always Never the Same, featured the London Symphony Orchestra and a cover of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” ∙ After nearly 20 years of lineup changes, all six original members briefly reunited in 1999 to record Somewhere to Elsewhere, which came out the following year. ∙ In 2005, the group was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame followed suit in 2013, as many members of the band now reside in that state.
