Mitchell Tenpenny shows off a new side of his artistry with the Nashville mainstay’s fourth full-length studio album, which adds a harder rock edge to the pop and soul-tinged country of the “Drunk Me” artist’s earlier work. Tenpenny teamed with songwriter and producer Jordan Schmidt (Kane Brown, HARDY) for the project, co-writing every song together and working collaboratively to craft a bigger, darker sound than that of Tenpenny’s earlier projects. The resulting songs maintain the wordplay-heavy lyricism that put Tenpenny on the map but explore new sonic territories, as on “Good Place”, which cleverly contrasts the emotional landscape after a break-up with the heady comforts of a bar. There’s still plenty of room for Tenpenny to show off his soft side, too, as on the tender and introspective “Bucket List”, which finds Tenpenny taking stock of his priorities.
