Powered by lively production and Drapht’s heart-on-sleeve swagger, Life of Riley is self-affirming and fiercely autobiographical. But the secret to its monster crossover success is the Perth MC’s many anthemic choruses and old-school rock samples. And while Drapht wears his Aussie accent with pride, he’s deeply versed in U.S. hip-hop and wide swaths of pop culture. The smooth-talking “Rapunzel” makes for a perfectly succinct single, but the album’s unrelenting fervor is best exemplified by “Sing It (The Life of Riley)”, an ode to fandom that name-checks golden-age rap and Nirvana in the same breath.
