Considering Thundamentals’ fifth LP comes only 18 months after 2017’s Everyone We Know, it seems clear that the Australian hip-hop trio had more to say. Thematically, their reaction to the political and social chaos in the world was to write a record about love: of music (as reflected in the title), of personal connection instead of social media (“I Miss You”), and of a partner, inspired in part by MC Tuka starting a new relationship during its creation. But what’s also surprising is their incorporation of house (“All I See Is Music”) and Caribbean-guitar flavours (“True Love”), showing they had all kinds of new musical ideas up their sleeves as well.
