If A$AP Ferg’s “Plain Jane” taught us anything, it’s that the Harlem-bred MC does not take his role as the A$AP crew’s resident party-starter lightly. Batting clean-up in a line-up of hits including “New Level”, “Work” and “Shabba”, “Plain Jane” solidified the MC as hip-hop’s go-to guy when you absolutely, positively have to turn up a situation. Ferg’s Floor Seats album, which comes two years after the “Plain Jane”-featuring Still Striving, serves as a compact reminder that very few people can do what the Trap Lord does. It’s a diverse set for only nine songs, Ferg switching from unbothered playboy (“Floor Seats”, “Jet Lag”) to maestro of mayhem (“Wigs”, “Butt Naked”) to old-school loverman MC of the LL Cool J mould (“Ride”, “Dreams, Fairytales, Fantasies”). It’s all part of the A$AP Ferg aesthetic, as is the chest-beating duet with A$AP Rocky, “Pups”, which is essentially a remake of DMX’s 1998 New York City mosh-rap classic “Get At Me Dog”.
