In Sub-Sahara Africa, circa 20% of food is lost even after harvesting, which is twice as high as in Europe and the US. For some important staple crops like maize this can be as high as 40-50%, undermining economic development and food security of rural farmer households. To tackle food waste and loss, #ETG announced joining the 10x20kx30 Commitment at the #Climate Week NYC, an initiative coordinated by the World Resources Institute (WRI) with partners including FAO, The World Bank and the private sector. André van den Beld, ETG Head Sustainability, highlighted in the panel the need for measurable and impactful interventions. Through a Target-Measure-Act approach, ETG will support at least 20,000 #farmers to reduce on-farm and near-farm food losses by 50% by 2030. This will include the scaling of farmer extension services in ETG’s crop trade and FMCG supply chains in #Africa. 10x20Kx30 | Champions 12.3 (champions123.org)

The governor of Kasai, a province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), recently visited ETG to seek support in addressing the province's maize challenges. He expressed a strong interest in having ETG train local farmers in advanced agricultural practices, particularly focusing on hybrid maize seeds and the effective use of fertilizers. The governor is optimistic that the successes ETG has experienced globally, especially in Zambia, can be mirrored in the DRC. The importance of hybrid seeds and fertilizers in the DRC cannot be overstated. Hybrid seeds are specifically designed to enhance crop yields, improve resistance to pests and diseases, and adapt to varying climatic conditions. Meanwhile, the use of fertilizers is crucial for replenishing soil nutrients, significantly boosting agricultural productivity. #agriculture #hydbridseeds #seeds #fertilizer #farmers #cropyields #soilhealth #DRC #africa

Together with farmers, we work on farm development plans to increase their productivity and improve their livelihoods. Through one-on-one coaching, which we call ‘Cocoaching’, our field officers help improve their knowledge and skills, assess their farm and its needs, and with the farmer, design a plan for the coming year. Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to environmental changes such as unfavourable #weather or crop #diseases. These plans help to address these challenges and guide activities designed to ensure the best outcomes. In partnership with farmers, we help them perform achievable tasks such as the application of compost, #pruning and shade tree planting. This week, Hidde Kuiken spoke on a panel at the Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA) conference in #Singapore on the 'Future of Asian Cocoa'. Over the past year, the global cocoa market has seen dramatic changes including much higher risks for traders. Hidde shared insights on how ETG has had to navigate this new landscape, noting that while these risks existed before, they have become much more pronounced. He also emphasized the importance of paying farmers fair prices to ensure the sustainability of the cocoa sector. As Asia is also a leading exporter of cocoa butter to the EU and US, regulations like the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) mean ETG and other players will need to adjust their business models and work more closely with other supply chain actors to stay resilient in the face of new market realities. While challenges loom, the demand for cocoa in Asia continues to grow, which Hidde said: “Offers hope for the region's continued evolution in the global cocoa market.” #CAAICCE2024 #cocoa #sustainability #eudr #asia #singapore #trade
