#WatchNow 🎥 Marisa Xuereb, Former President of The Malta Chamber, on 'Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103'. She emphasises the below points: 1️⃣ It is wrong to presume that everyone who is in business is wealthy. Business is hard work and if you try to do things right in a market where laws are not enforced, it is actually very difficult to compete. 2️⃣ Malta does not have a proper economic model because if we did we would be able to anticipate the bottlenecks and infrastructural needs, and plan accordingly, rather than have everything hit us by surprise. 3️⃣ The transition to electric vehicles puts significant strain on the grid, a challenge that was anticipated. The Low Carbon Development Strategy of 2021 set ambitious EV targets, but follow-through has been lacking. These plans have become more symbolic than actionable, failing to drive necessary infrastructure investments. 4️⃣ The civil service should operate independently to maintain checks and balances, with ministers offering political direction without interfering in daily operations. Permanent secretaries and CEOs must be competent decision-makers, not merely agreeable to ministers. Ministers need objective advisors, not "yes-men." Frequent CEO changes hinder effective leadership and progress. 5️⃣ We now risk a complete paralysis of the civil service as people in the civil service are now realising that there are significant risks in saying "yes" to Ministers as well. Another advantage is the high degree of diversification of our relatively small economy. This provides endless possibilities for product and service development. Whether it’s tourism, financial services, manufacturing, transportation, media, telecoms, energy, health – the Maltese economy provides ample opportunities for highly diverse economic activities, all of which can be enhanced through creative digital solutions.” She added that “This does not mean that we do not have our challenges. One of the obstacles to our progress with digitization is a shortage of properly skilled staff in the subject area. Modernising current employment and skills regulations is also critical to meeting the demands of a digitally transformed world. Regardless of the industry or nature of the job, competency with digital tools and services is required. The Malta Chamber argues that one critical prerequisite is for the school system to provide all pupils with a basic awareness of technology, which is unfortunately still lacking today.” 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘢 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 176 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺 – 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴.

The Malta Chamber CEO, Dr Marthese Portelli, addresses the recent ⚡ power cuts and their significant impact on our economy during the 📺 TV Programme Perspittiva. Key Points: 🔹 Due to the adverse effects on the quality of service, the private sector may have to curtail its own investment going forward until the government catches up. 🔹 Power cuts in residential areas are largely due to the rapid construction of housing units, hotels, and restaurants without adequate infrastructure. 🔹 A committed 5-10 year investment plan in infrastructure is essential. This plan should be developed with serious consultation with the private sector, including clear milestones and deliverables. 🔹 The business community is deeply concerned about employee welfare. Long hours without electricity, especially in the heat, pose safety risks and negatively impact business performance and productivity. Watch here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dje2KDBk
