New Page Review
[edit]HI Ilana.
Good practice on Wikipedia requires that you comment at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers on the posts that are marked for your attention.
Best wishes for the holidays and 2020.

Community Tech Launches Wikisource Improvement Initiative (:s:ja/VP)
[edit]Hi, just to update you that your invitation for comments at Wikisource/ja/Village Pump was put into Japanese language. Ping me anytime you would need en-ja ja-en translation. It would be nice if you tweak the project page for translation, as a kind regard toward inclusiveness and multi-lingual enrollment. Cheers, —Omotecho (talk) 23:14, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Omotecho: Hello, and thank you for the message! We have now marked the project page for translation. Also, thank you for sharing the link to the Japanese Village Pump announcement; it was very exciting to see the translation. --IFried (WMF) (talk) 20:41, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @IFried (WMF):, thank you for the update: one lazy request, and would you mind to separate section title from the body text? That way, any busy translator be tempted to at least put TOC into local langage, which will encourage others in that local tongue to either jump in/manage to read en text. (Practically, we can steal a few minutes and put section titles into local language even if your kettle is boiling and whisling hard ;)) --Omotecho (talk) 23:01, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Watchlist expiration
[edit]Hello, can I know the exact mediawiki gadget coding should be for the gadget. I don't think copy-pasting the code is enough? Or am I wrong? Thanks for your help. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 17:25, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Camouflaged Mirage: Apologies for the late reply! Yes, copying & pasting the code should be enough. I have tested and was able to successfully restore the old pop-up. Here's how: Go to your common.css page (such as this link here). Then copy and paste the following code:
.mw-WatchlistExpiryWidgetwatchlist-dropdown-label, .mw-watchexpiry.oo-ui-dropdownInputWidget, #mw-editpage-watchlist-expiry { display: none; }
Once you save the changes, you'll see that there is no longer the option to choose a temporary watch period on the wiki. The old behavior is restored. Let us know if it works for you or if you need further assistance. Thanks! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:27, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. It works. :) Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 16:18, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
Harassment by Camouflaged Mirage
[edit]I initiated a discussion with Dreamy Jazz and Camouflaged Mirage began harassing me. What is the procedure for dealing with this? 92.24.105.36 13:50, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
OCR and related tricks
[edit]I posted some very brief replies to questions at Talk:Community Tech/OCR Improvements, but largely insufficient to understand what I mean. :-) Do you know best it.wikisource tricks to fasten OCR fixing (postOCR) and nsPage editing? If you'd like to take a look, I'll be happy to help you. The two key gadgets are memoRegex (that saves and shares an index page specific substitutions) and eis (Edit in Sequence), that allows AJAX loading, editing, previewing a saving of nsPage wikitext. The third gadget opens a list of customable buttons fixed at bottom of the page. --Alex brollo (talk) 11:43, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
Wikimania session about OCR
[edit]Hi Ilana, I'm organising a Round Table about OCR (and other tools for Wikisource) at Wikimania. The idea is to present the situation as it is, and the new improvements of the tool(s), and have some discussion. I already contacted Samwilson, who is on board. Would you like to present something and participate to the discussion? I would ask you to brief me on what introduction to say, and then you'll be free to present what's going on in the Community Tech team.
There are other sessions proposed about Wikisource, but we wanted (we, the members of the user group) to have a more open session. Lemme know! Cheers --Ruthven (msg) 21:05, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Ruthven: Hello, and thank you so much for thinking of me! I'm no longer on the Community Tech team, so I wouldn't be the person to co-present. However, the new Community Tech product manager, Natalia Rodriguez, may be interested; I recommend you reach out to her! Thanks again and I hope to bump into you, virtually at least, at Wikimania! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 22:31, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021 submission
[edit]Dear Ilana,
On behalf of the Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021 programme committee, I am pleased to inform you that your submission "Building Organizer Tools for the Future of Campaigns" has been accepted as a lecture, and it was scheduled for 09:10 (UTC) on Sunday, 7 November (see the draft schedule). Considering that the conference will have language interpretation from English into Russian and vice versa, you have the choice between English and Russian as a language that you will use in your session. If you have not yet registered for the conference, please follow the instructions on this page. In case you have any additional requests or questions, do not hesitate to contact me or any other committee member.
Best regards.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 09:13, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
CampaignEvent Beta Tester
[edit]Hi @IFried (WMF)!
I trust you are doing well. I would like to request for Campaign Event beta rights for utilization in our Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Abuja program. After participation in the Demo sessions, I think it will be helpful coordination and management of our teachers active participation in the program activities. It will also afford us the opportunity to put it to use with real project other than demo. Thanks for your time and consideration. Regards. Atibrarian (talk) 04:52, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Translation admin
[edit]Good day, please read mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example on how to mark pages for translation properly. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:02, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Translate markup issues
[edit]Dear IFried,
That kind of edit (or that one) are problematic because they invalidate previous translations. To avoid that issue, please take care:
- To not mark a page for translation which has not manually reviewed through Internationalization guidelines. VisualEditor don’t take care of Translate markup, the translation admin should review the wikitext before marking the page for translation.
- To try not to move unit markers while editing with VisualEditor. VE displays the heading, then a comment (the heading unit marker), then two newline characters (displayed as arrows), then, eventually, another comment (unit marker for the following paragraph). If you want to add text after the heading, you have to add it actually after the heading unit marker comment. Note, in any case, VisualEditor will not provide a proper code, so the wikitext must be edited by a translation admin before marking the page.
You may ask for help at Meta talk:Babylon. If you wrongly mark pages, that does not help the community, that give them more work instead.
Regards, -- Pols12 (talk) 19:18, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for this heads up and explanation, @Pols12ǃ IFried (WMF) (talk) 19:59, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
Input methods
[edit]Dear IFried,
Another topic: you seem to have enabled Input methods. This tool allows to type special characters onwiki. While typing English, the main symptom is Colons (:) are replaced with Modifier Letter Triangular Colons (ː). Pressing Ctrl M (Cmd M on Mac) should you help switching to normal input. 🙂

- Thank you for this tip, @Pols12ǃ Much appreciated. IFried (WMF) (talk) 20:01, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
