Soft redirect

[edit]

This way is incorrect action for translatable page. What about translations? Page Wikimedia Resource Center/Contact and Questions/Ask a question is a part of multilanguage portal, this is linked with another pages through navigational menu. Please explain your invention. In my opinion, it should be doing contrary: Ask a question (if this is needed) should be redirected to this page. --Kaganer (talk) 15:49, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kaganer, I am in the process of making Ask a question independent of the Wikimedia Resource Center. You are right that a soft redirect makes things more complicated for translators, so I have made that page into a proper redirect and de-listed it from page translation so that there is no doubt as to which the correct page is. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Harej (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, but why would Ask a question don't include in the Resource Center as one from resources? By way of another pages (Learning patterns etc.)? Another input point for these same page? This will require a more complex design (to avoid "template loop detected" error), but this way is more systematic, is not it? --Kaganer (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Kaganer, the plan is to no longer transclude whole pages in the Resource Center, but to link out to them instead. You can see a prototype here. Ask a question happened to switch early because it factors significantly into the new design, so I needed to re-design it first. Harej (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ok, that is, I do not need to correct anything in the old pages and templates of Resource Center, since they will go under the removal? --Kaganer (talk) 22:23, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
And why Ask a question is uncategorized? --Kaganer (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
That's a good question. I have added it to Category:Community engagement. Harej (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I fixing some things... --Kaganer (talk) 22:23, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
And you plan to delete (or convert) old translations of "Wikimedia Resource Center/Contact and Questions/Ask a question", and also old translations of "Ask a question/Recent questions"? --Kaganer (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
For Wikimedia Resource Center/Contact and Questions/Ask a question I should be able to convert the translated text for the new pages. I think the Ask a question/Recent questions translations can be deleted since it was just one translated sentence that isn't used on the new version. Also, thank you for your translations into Russian! Harej (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Another question: Ask a question included in the Category:Community engagement, but "Ask a question"'s subpages is placed into Category:Wikimedia Resource Center - Contact and Questions. These will be re-categorized? --Kaganer (talk) 22:33, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kaganer, I have now created Category:Ask a question and put Ask a question and subpages into it. As for the Wikimedia Resource Category system in general, I will probably be deleting most of them since overall there will be fewer pages. Harej (WMF) (talk) 22:48, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I converted this for further translations. --Kaganer (talk) 23:08, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Edits done for translated pages under Grants:Evaluation

[edit]

Hi James, I have noticed your edits for several pages under Grants:Evaluation that were translated into Arabic. I found that most of the pages do not show the correct percentage for translation progress and also some show 100% though the text displayed is in English. I wanted to bring this to your attention so you would be able to rectify and do the needful. Happy editing. HaythamAbulela 03:52, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Haytham abulela, thank you for your report. I got in touch with Nikerabbit and he suggested that that may be related to a recent database issue that may have been partly caused by the page moves. Harej (WMF) (talk) 21:14, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi James, I have noticed that some pages were rectified, thanks to FuzzyBot edits. Thanks. HaythamAbulela 03:42, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template:I18n/Wikimedia Resource Center

[edit]

Hi! This way (applied in Template:I18n/Wikimedia Resource Center) is very unuseful and unclear for translators & translationadmins, since doesn't support "translation variables" (<tvar></>). May be better do separation links and translatable texts. --Kaganer (talk) 11:50, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kaganer, I am happy to add translation variables for links. What would be the best documentation to read to learn more about how they work and how to use them? Harej (WMF) (talk) 18:17, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I already tried this, but it broke the links in resulted pages (where called your module). Your module module:ModuleMsg is used separate translation items in the "Translations:" namespace. In these items "tvar" is not replaced to source code. This replacement is made only on the translated pages themselves (as Template:I18n/Wikimedia Resource Center/ar, Template:I18n/Wikimedia Resource Center/en etc.). Please see my edits in page history (reverted). --Kaganer (talk) 21:19, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
PS: Translation variables is documented in the mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_administration. --Kaganer (talk) 21:43, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
For your case, I see two possible solutions:
  1. Addition in the Template:I18n/Wikimedia Resource Center some warning massage for translation admins, like "Please don't use "tvar" because..." (as first step in any cases)
  2. Extract links code into separate page like "Module:Wikimedia Resource Center/Links", and then combine them with the translations in the module module:ModuleMsg or Module:Wikimedia Resource Center.
Current way is partially incompatible with the Translation Extension. This use implies that only "plain text" is translated (without variables), or the text of the links only, without the wiki-markup.

Category names

[edit]

Next way of category naming is not fully appropriate:

By common way, should be used " - " or "/" for separation. Please, think about how to change these to style "Category:Learning and Evaluation/Start", or "Category:Learning and Evaluation - Start". Which way will you choose? --Kaganer (talk) 17:33, 19 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Javascript form on Wikimedia Resouce Center

[edit]

Hi James

Update: I discovered the form uses FormWizard and have made a request for it to be enabled on Wikidata here. Please ignore what I wrote below, but I may come back with some questions], hope that's ok.

So I'm trying to improve the way data imports are recorded on Wikidata and I think the Wikimedia Resource Center is an amazing model to use. I want to run a workshop with experts at UNESCO in a few weeks to ask them to collate data sources for International Women's Day. The current system on the Wikidata Import Hub relies on people knowing Wikitext and lots of people are getting things wrong.

All I want is a when you click the button at the top of the page you get a pop up box like you did for adding new resources to the Wikimedia Resource Center but it just adds a new section to the page. The form would have the following fields:

  • Name: The name of the dataset you want to import
  • Source: The source of the dataset e.g the organisation who created it or published it
  • Link: A URL link to the dataset
  • Description: A short (less than 20 word) description of the dataset outlining the contents e.g A list of protected areas in Pakistan

These fields then then populate a new section on the main Wikidata Import Hub page like so:

==NAME==

Description of dataset Create and import data into spreadsheet Structure of data within Wikidata Format the data to be imported Match the data to existing data Importing data into Wikidata Date import complete and notes
Name:NAME

Source:SOURCE

Is this something you could do? I'm sorry to ask but I can't find a place to request this sort of thing and I am a complete muggle :(

Wikisource-bot

[edit]

Tool is generally available for maintenance tasks on the wikisource sites, and predominantly enWS; tasks like talk archiving; and some of the pywikibot tasks. It doesn't have active web tools, so there isn't a lot else to say beyond it does minor bot stuff.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:31, 22 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Working on the WRC Gadget-wrcEditor-core.js source code.

[edit]

Hello Harej,

I'm working on the Gadget source code, trying to add an indicator, required fields etc. But when I do that, check the edits here: MediaWiki:Gadget-wrcEditor-core.js, it doesn't seem to take effects and I've followed the documentation here: mw:OOUI/Widgets/Icons,_Indicators,_and_Labels. A helping hand please! --DAlangi (WMF) (talk) 21:01, 7 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello, DAlangi. Usually when that happens it means your browser's cache needs to be purged; you can do this with a hard refresh. It's also worth looking in your browser's element inspector / console to see if there are any errors from the code. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. Harej (WMF) (talk) 23:22, 7 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the tip Harej. Also, I was not using the oojs-ui-core which has this indicator attribute. I've added that to be loaded as well and also noticed that indicator and/or required attributes work well for TextInputWidget but doesn't work for MenuTagMultiselectWidget and DropdownInputWidget. But I'm still looking for a way to make this work! Any ideas will be of help too. --DAlangi (WMF) (talk) 23:44, 7 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Interrractive events calendar and maps

[edit]

Hi Jim, this is the lin to the global francophone calendar. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimédia_France/Actions

People who would know about it: User:0x010C and User:Pyb Nice talking to you! --Nattes à chat (talk) 13:10, 21 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Just a point @Nattes à chat:, even if the Events calendar is currently mainly used by French-speaking people, it's absolutely not limited to them; i18n has been integrated since the beginning and it can store events from all around the world. — 0x010C ~talk~ 14:09, 21 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes exactly, but I found at the conference in Berlin that not a lot of people knew about this wonderful tool, so I felt like sharing it with others. Seems like a lot of people want it (sorry to ping you all over the place) are interested. So thank you for all your work on this! Nattes à chat

Message in the letter box

[edit]

Dear James, I received your message thank you very much! I forgot to go and see the letter box, what a shame, but someone sent it to me. It was nice talking to you and getting to know about your useful work. I have made a few reports here and there about these subjects, trying to put in practice the notion of sharing what I learned and did at the conference for others who were not there. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Les_sans_pagEs#Conférence_Wikimedia_à_Berlin_du_18_au_22_avril and to the Wikiwomen user group: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WikiWomen's_User_Group#Wikimedia_conference_2018_in_Berlin. I wish you all the best! Nattes à chat

Resources for users/readers

[edit]

I'm interested in bringing together something either within or parallel to your Wikimedia Resource Center, but targeted users/readers rather than contributors. Content I'd want to link would include (but not be limited to):

Some of this content may be due for a rewrite; it hasn't been revisited in a long time, and I have not recently done a close review of it.

Thoughts? - Jmabel (talk) 04:39, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

User talk:-revi/Archives/2018#Your help is requested

[edit]

Sorry for the super late (later than I promised) reply. I was really busy IRL.

  1. Maybe you can simplify lede with "JADE is a feedback protocol (and software) for ORES" or sort like this? "Can be" sounds too weak, I got an impression it may not be used such.
  2. I'm admin on the wiki, most qualified user to know about anti-vandalism coordination. Interest in better coordination - that depends on what the prototype is, we can always fall into a daydream.
  3. Never thought about this topic - but what bias we are worrying about should be defined first, IMO.

Hope you find this helpful. — regards, Revi 09:50, 27 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Adapting the Women in Red Biography Percentage Tracker for Good Articles

[edit]

Hi Harej, I was told you operate the bot that updates what percentage of biographies on Wikipedia cover women (for the Women in Red project). Would it be possible to adapt the tool to monitor the percentage of good article biographies (and/or featured article biographies) that are about women to use for the Women in Green project? Thanks! Worldwide monthly rating of Wikipedia Reading ststistics

[edit]

Hi!

A very big motivator for editors is a position of a Wikipedia in a certain language in the worldwide monthly rating of Wikipedia Reading statistics.

Unlill February 2019 the table was a very convenient source of data.

All we need is a monthly rating of Wikipedia Reading statistics.

See an example. Now I collect it manually:
