Media formats, editing, and display Submitted

Description

Volunteers noted the importance of supporting new file formats and improving features and tools that can allow users to upload high-efficiency images to Wikimedia sites, have an easier editing experience and improved use of media players.

Volunteers have requested for Wikimedia Commons to support new file formats (including DNG and AVIF files, open fonts, and full colour 3D models, and to offer integrated image editing—from a straightforward CropTool replacement to fully-featured image editors (Image Editor for Commons, A set of tools for image editing directly in Wikimedia Commons). There were also more targeted requests, such as the addition of a second base layer for maps and the ability to convert SVG files into gifs.

Beyond images, there were requests for improved media players (A proper audio player, Video & audio chapters) and tools to subtitle and translate media (Add a subtitling tool for easy subtitling and translating, Machine translation of audio sources).

Support Support Prototyperspective (talk) 21:38, 13 December 2024 (UTC) a modernized audio player with skip x seconds back functionality, good UI, and chapters (for article sections) could more than double Wikipedia readership when used for spoken Wikipedia audios; also useful for videos on Commons; the audio format has huge potential for Wikimedia[reply]
Support Support Kristbaum (talk) 17:37, 14 December 2024 (UTC) Having textured 3D models would allow users that are currently hosting those models on proprietary platforms like sketchfab, to have an alternative.[reply]
Support Support RedAuburn (talk) 18:16, 14 December 2024 (UTC) Proper 3D model support & AVIF are both essential[reply]

Support Support Theklan (talk) 19:17, 14 December 2024 (UTC) We need a better Wikimedia Commons. This is a good start.[reply]
Support Support Waldyrious (talk) 09:09, 15 December 2024 (UTC) All of these are important, but the 3D models aspect is a crucial category of educational content that is essentially missing in the current status.[reply]

Support Support Demonocrazy (talk) 08:27, 16 December 2024 (UTC) This needs to be started now. We need a platform to manage the videos more native: with visualization of visits, with option in Commons to put covers, with several audio tracks, with facility to manage subtitles, with possibility to create clickable subtitles...[reply]

Support Support MGeog2022 (talk) 14:10, 16 December 2024 (UTC) Unless there aren't enough resources for the needed work, there is no reason not to support as many open file formats as possible, or to improve the media players.[reply]
Support Support Abzeronow (talk) 18:25, 16 December 2024 (UTC) Yes, this would help Commons.[reply]
Support Support Clwacker (talk) 19:01, 16 December 2024 (UTC) It's a good time to be able to take advantage of the huge number of 3D images created in museums and by private individuals.[reply]
Support Support TheDJ (talk) 12:17, 17 December 2024 (UTC) While I don't support some of these ideas, in general, I do support additional work on these areas. Long term commitment to the health of the media eco system is required BEFORE we can even add new features.[reply]
