4x4 square templates nominated for deletion
editHello Jdforrester. I've nominated a number of most-perfect magic square templates for deletion. You participated in an earlier discussion in 2005 that was never closed; if you'd like to comment again, please see Meta:Requests for deletion#4x4_type_squares. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:35:26, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you! Have responded there - and I agree with you, this time. :-)

#Wikimedia-Checkuser
editHello Jdforrester, how are you? I learned today that there is a #Wikimedia-checkuser chat room, and I also know that none of the current checkusers on en.wb have access to it. Some of our CUs are cross-project CUs and admins, so I think it would be a valuable addition. Do you think you could add the following 3 usernames?
- wknight8111
- Mike_lifeguard
- SB_Johnny
We have two other CUs that aren't active on IRC, so I don't think we need to worry about them quite yet. Let me know if you need anything, like confirmation or whatever. Thanks! --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 14:31, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikimania template
editHi! I'm aware that redlinks in general is a good thing, but as I see it, a bid requires an active group behind it, and as such, a bid is not something someone might create just to get rid of a redlink (as you would with an article in Wikipedia). As for the discussion; where has this taken place? There is nothing on the talkpage, and no mention of it in the template history. Everything there, is an edit summary from you about restoring them and adding Gdansk. If there has been any discussion on this, someone should place a link on the talkpage, or at least mention it in an edit summary to notify others who may not be very active on meta.
As for the cities in red; the links were added on July 15. when the template was created. I removed them on August 10., nearly a month after. I wont oppose other bids in any way, competition is just healthy. But at the same time, I see no point in keeping them there, especially when nothing have been done about them so far, and also when there is nothing to stop them from inserting the various countries when they actually get started. As for my COI; yeah, I'm involved in one of the bids. I'm working to create a bid which will lead to what I believe will be the best Wikimania ever. But at the same time I cannot for any good reason see why this should be a problem, as a) competition is healthy, and b) Wikimania 2010 should go to the group with the best bid, even if this is someone else but the team I'm involved with! I understand that I might be concieved as having a COI in this, but I removed the links for other reasons than to sabotage or stop other bids from occuring. As for the minor edit; this is not an excuse in any way, but the "mark every edit as minor" option in the preferences was on. It has since been set to not mark them as such. I will not revert myself, as I don't agree with you in this case, at least not right now. If you decide to revert me that's fine, but please link to the discussion you mentioned! IRC Logging
editJames, would you confirm whether or not the proposal at IRC guidelines/wikipedia/Public logging is intended to include #admins as well? Cheers --Mcginnly 17:11, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

editI'm not able to request an IRC cloack on any automatic page. It seems that the page have crashed. What can I do to request it?. Kind regards: --Dferg (talk) 19:36, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what advice I can give - the system appears to be working fine for me. What steps did you take that cause it to fail to work? What do you mean by "crash" - does it stop responding? Not render? Something else?
- James F. (talk) 11:48, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Well, when I click on the link it appears the following sentence: Could not establish connection to MySQL server.(this is an account on the toolserver). I don't know how to do cause Sean Whitton didn't answer to my message. Regards: Dferg (talk) 18:35, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, forgive me; my link at the top of the page is very old. This should work.

- Mmm, sorry it doesn't works. I see a completely white page. I tried to refresh the page but it still doesn't works. I don't know how to do. May be a bug?. Regards.
- Dferg (talk) 08:39, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Apparently this was a problem created by the Toolserver being changed so much by the sysadmins. Should now work.

June meet up London
editelements cross-posted
Hi James, your meeting in London clashes with a board meeting in Birmingham of Wikimedia UK. Is this a problem? We are considering organising a Birmingham wikimeet on that Sunday. Would you consider moving your event? Victuallers 15:10, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Will ask the others who've signed-up, but provisionally sounds OK.
- James F. (talk) 19:39, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- ... and done.
- James F. (talk) 21:37, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Well I am thrilled James, thanks very much. Some members of my board said it wouldn't even be considered. As it is the Birmingham date is looking a bit shaky too so if you can can be a little patient (7 days) then we can adjust as necessary. Again Thanks. btw Is there an official way to launch the Birmingham meetup when its finalised or do we just add it to the template and "be bold"? Victuallers 14:22, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- Absolutely no problem.
- Yes, just go for it. Being bold is always a good idea. There's definitely nothing "official" about the community meetups, at least in the UK. :-)

Meetups in Oxford
editHi, I was wondering, since you seem to go to most of London's meetups, how viable do you think meetups in Oxford could be? Is it at all worthwhile to possibly have a similar regularity like currently done in London? -- Mentifisto 22:05, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hey! The hard thing is getting a core group and having the desire to just say "go for it" - every month or every two months should be fine, as long as you have half-a-dozen people or so. People can easily travel up from London or down from Birmingham and all places in between, so I'd just say make a start, and it'd be fun to join your next meetup!

Questions to Board candidates
editBased on the statistics concerning the number of pages read in previous years' Q&As, I infer that few voters take them into account. Personally, I see it as a very interesting exercise despite the fact that we the candidates are also the main readers. I believe it is a unique type of debate among us that is especially interesting.
I have noticed that User Alecmconroy suggested a very interesting series of questions on strategic issues. They can be seen here: User talk:Alecmconroy#More questions for Board Candidates (or others). I have given my opinion, but I see he has not communicated directly to the candidates this set of questions. Perhaps you find them interesting.
I wish you the best possible result in these elections and, if you agree, I suggest that we continue having this type of debate regardless of who is chosen.
Cheers and good luck.--Gomà 09:12, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Eurgh. If he wanted answers, he probably should have asked me. But thanks for drawing my attention!

There's no end to question time :)
editThere's no end to question time! Maybe there was time-sensitivity in submitting questions for formal translation, but that's no reason not to answer other informal questions from the community. I'd encourage you to continue accepting and answering questions regardless of timetables.
Whether my little question bank is helpful or not, that's up to you decide-- I'm agnostic on that question. But definitely don't go into silence mode just because a clock struck 00:00 UTC-- keep engaging with the voters in as many venues as feasible. --Alecmconroy 12:56, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ha, well, OK. Working on them now.

Help compile Objective Data about the Candidates
editPosted to all candidates talk page:
To aid in the fair evaluation of all the candidates, especially those not active on EnWiki, verifiable data about the candidates is being compiled. Anyone is invited to help compile the data since it is all publicly available on-wiki.
But since the people best qualified to help are the candidates themselves, it seems reasonable to ask:
- Which languages do you speak? (voter statement)
- Which projects do you contribute to?
- For each, when was your first edit?
- For each, how many total edits? (exact figures not need)
- Which projects are you an admin on?
- Are you a bureaucrat? which projects? when?
- Are you a CheckUser? Which projects? When did you start??
- Are you a steward? If so when were you made one?
- Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on a project? (e.g. Like EnWiki's Founder or Arbcom member)
- Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on at the Chapter or Foundation level? (Trustee, etc)
Are there any objectively verifiable facts that should be included in this guide but aren't?
(Incidentally, this document won't reflect my own personal values or wikipolitical opinions. Ideally it will come to exist outside of my userspace in some neutral, visible location. -- Alecmconroy)

- You can actually just use the normal Meta-Wiki babel boxes:
{{#babel:fr-0}}
. James is a rebel and doesn't use the normal ones. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 19:40, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
- Only when that one would go to become the James's version) --eugrus 13:42, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- There's clearly a difference - "my" babel-0 boxes (which were apparently the first ever frivolous use of babel boxes, and thus the entire user boxes war fiasco is my fault) are intended to explain not just that I don't speak said language, but that I've tried and failed to speak it. The "official"(?!) ones are much more po-faced, and just informs the person's lack of linguistic abilities. :-)
- James F. (talk) 19:52, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Um
editQuite the opposite. I was basically saying is that since everything is in CC-BY-SA 3.0, the WMF can at any time replace de.wiki with the previous content and without the users/admin/etc. Thus, it creates a fork of the original de and can restart at will. It can also tell people that if they want to remove the content that they are no longer welcome to the WMF projects. Ottava Rima (talk) 22:14, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- Aha. Sorry for my confusion. I'd not that generally that wouldn't be thought of as a fork (in much the same way that when you revert an article change that someone's made, that's not "forking").
- James F. (talk) 23:11, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- What I had in mind is that if Italian's users decided to block the site and redirect to a protest the WMF could make an italy.wikipedia.org with all of the articles without the redirect nor the same community in place with the same admin, etc., and could even potentially lock it to keep them out. Did you ever attend Wikimania with your money? Talk to us!
editTL;DR: Fill a short Wikimania survey, it takes 5 min.
Hi, I'm writing you because you are listed in Wikimania/Frequent attendees. As you probably know by now, Wikimania 2016 Esino Lario wants to achieve a Wikimania format which allows people to "get things done" and leave the conference fully satisfied with the result of their investment of time and other resources (see pillars 2 and 4: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars ). For this purpose, we consider all audiences (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Program#Target ).
Participants other than scholarship recipients and reimbursed representatives are one group we heard very little from, but we think they are important because: 1) they have financial resources and help make the Wikimania budget sustainable; 2) they have motivation to share and ideas on what makes Wikimania valuable.
We set up a form mainly to collect names of some such people and talk with them later: if you provide your contact, we may write you on this topic. We may release aggregate data from the resposes; data will be handled by us and the Wikimania 2016 fiscal sponsor "Ecomuseo delle Grigne" (under EU law). Please fill the whole form, it's short!
Feel free to forward this invite to anyone.
Thanks,

The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!
18:26, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!
