Just to you now

I tried the quiet way, but one of the staffs make fun of me and give no data, and now I'm blocked there, so no quiet way is possible. Thanks for your time, and sorry about that. Message/Invitation for India Community Consultation 2014 on w:mr
editHello,
Thank you very much for your message on my talk page on w:mr. I think this is a *great* initiative and much will be gained by the participants to take back to their home projects.
I will be thrilled to be at such a meeting and provide my two cents about working on a relatively smaller wikipedia for more than a decade. I have self-nominated myself at the moment. I will also initiate a discussion on w:mr to see if there are more and/or better candidates to represent w:mr.
I would love to know logistics details so I can start adjusting my other commitments in order to attend this important event.
Thank you again.
Abhay Natu Admin, 'crat, w:mr
- Dear Abhay: I'm thrilled to hear you're interested in attending. Following your on-wiki discussion, please add the nominated names (no more than 3 or 4 please) to the nominated delegates list. The meeting is to start Oct 4th in the morning, so we will be flying delegates to Bangalore on the 3rd; accommodation will be provided. In the coming few days, we'll get started booking flights, and will share more information with the confirmed delegate list. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:51, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

editI am interested to nominate your name for a Merchandise T-shirt Merchandise giveaways/Nominations. In 2012-2013 I was nominating people directly, there I saw a discussion where a group of people told they would not like to be nominated there. Since then I am asking permission before nominating.

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.
The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee is requesting comments on the approval process and agreements for Wikimedia user groups.
Wikimedia user groups are groups of Wikimedia users who support and promote the Wikimedia projects in the offline world by organizing meetups and other projects. The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee's responsibilities include approval of new Wikimedia user groups.
The committee will seek community input until Friday, May 1, 2015. The committee will then review the community's input, and publish the new process and agreements on Meta-Wiki. The committee will again seek community input approximately six months after any changes are adopted to gauge effectiveness and if any additional changes are necessary.
Please see the RFC page on Meta-Wiki for more information and to provide feedback.

numbers in table
editHello Asaf, I do not understand why you made this edit. According to the history of the article is was created on May 2nd. It should therefor be "05-02" (Number of the month: 05 -which is May- and Number of the Day: 2) and not 04-10, because your article was not written on April 10th or was it? Now all of your dates are not on line with the dates of the other contributors, as you can see. Best regards, Magalhães (talk) 07:09, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Indeed, I wrote it today. I have developed a lag of about 20 days due to intensive travel and other difficulties. So I have failed the challenge of an-article-a-day-no-matter-what. :( But I'm still interested in the challenge of 100 articles in 100 days, i.e. I'm hoping to close this gap and write more than one article on some days, so that I gradually catch up. That's why I'm noting the articles with the date they were supposed to be written on. While that does put my lines out of sync with the lines surrounding it, if you sort the table by date in the future you would be able to see my 100 articles in order. In other words, I still want to finish the challenge on time, which is why I'm not labeling today's article as today, when it's supposed to be 59, not 39. I hope that's clear. Ijon (talk) 07:21, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I was somewhat confused, but now I understand. Sorry to bother you. Magalhães (talk) 09:54, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

- When? June 2015
- How can you help?
- 1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
- 2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
- 3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)
Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.
Thanks, and happy editing!
Latin script articles in the Konkani Wikipedia
editHi Asaf Bartov, I feel that the Konkani Wikipedia, which has been approved by LangCom, should inclue the Latin script articles as well. The only reason I've seen put forward to exclude the Latin script articles is that Devanagari is the official script. WMCN
editHi Asaf, as the acronyms "CN" assigned by AffCom on Wikimedia movement affiliates, I think we can use WMCN to represent Wikimedia User Group China.--AddisWang (talk) 04:34, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Addis: No, I'm afraid you can't. CN is fine as an abbreviation for the PRC, but the WM prefix is reserved for chapters, and it would be misleading to use WMCN in writing. You can use either the full name or the abbreviation "UG CN". Ijon (talk) 08:37, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.
The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee is pleased to introduce the launch of the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list, which is basically a place for all the affiliates (chapters, thematic organizations, user groups) to discuss issues related to affiliates, make announcements to other affiliates, and collaborate on activities and community-wide events. The idea is to help facilitate the dialogue affiliates across our movement, plus collaborative discussions like community-wide activities, joint edit-a-thons, regional conferences, blog/report posts, or other communications from affiliates.
Each Wikimedia movement affiliate is allocated three spots on the mailing list. All affiliates may contact the Affiliations Committee to request additional spots if needed.
Please find a bit more information on Meta-Wiki and do not hesitate to contact the Affiliations Committee if you have further questions.

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.
The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups – is looking for new members!
The main role of the Affiliations Committee is to guide groups of volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and advise the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees on issues connected to chapters, thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.
The committee consists of twelve members, six of whom are selected every twelve months for staggered two-year terms.
- Key skills
Being a part of the Affiliations Committee requires communication with volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill sets in our members. The key skills and experience that we look for in candidates are:
- Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of volunteers worldwide.
- Willingness to process applications through a set, perhaps bureaucratic process.
- Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliations, and similar questions.
- Availability of up to 5 hours per week, and the time to participate in a monthly ~2 hour voice/video meeting.
- International orientation.
- Very good communication skills in English.
- Ability to work and communicate with other languages and cultures.
- Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF.
- Knowledge of different legal systems and experience in community building and organising are a plus.
- Effective communication skills in other languages are a major plus.
- Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus.
- Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.
We are looking for people who are not afraid of the workload and are motivated by helping other volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission around the world.
- Selection process
As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2015 member selection process will include a public review and comment period. All applications received by the committee will be posted on Meta (at Affiliations Committee/Candidates/2015), and the community will be invited to provide comments and feedback about each candidate.
At the end of the public comment period, the applications will be voted on by the members of the committee who are not seeking re-election, taking into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisors, WMF staff and board liaisons, and the community. A final decision will be made by mid-January 2016, with new members expected to join later that month.
- How to apply
If you are interested in joining the committee, please send an application to [email protected] by 31 December 2015. You will get a confirmation that your application was received.
Your application should include the following:
- Your full name
- Your contact information (including e-mail address and username)
- A statement describing your relevant experience, skills, and motivation for joining the committee.
Your statement will be published for community review and feedback, so please do not include any information that you are not comfortable sharing.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me and/or the committee as a whole. We are happy to chat or have a phone call with anyone about our work if this helps them decide to apply. Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you are interested!

Carlos Colina

editHi Asaf! Just discovered you as I was going through some meta pages and am excited to have found you!
I'm helping organize this year's WikiCon USA/SoCal in San Diego (Oct 7-10) and our local GLAM organizations are very very excited! Balboa Park is an incredible location, with more than 15 GLAM institutions within walking distance from each other. I'll be going to the wiki GLAM workshop in DC next month. Are you part of that? I'm very curious about any tools our GLAM partners could use. We are hoping to trigger a big bump in participation from the beautiful & diverse SoCal region. Many things possible. Your visions, insights and expertise would be very valuable for me to understand if we can schedule a time to talk. DrMel (talk) 23:01, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Content gap
editHi, Following your very interesting content gap comparison a discussion started in the Hebrew wiki village pump. The main discussion was if 17% is reflective of women contribution in history (due to lack of opportunities, etc ...) or is biased writing. Is wikipedia reflective of the sources we use, or is it the actual contribution (since it is consistent in many languages). I wonder what is your take on this. 2016 Community Wishlist Survey
editHi,
You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.
The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Training modules: Can you help us with translation?
editHello Ijon, hope all is well! As you may know, we at the Wikimedia Foundation's Support and Safety team are developing new training materials to help contributors deal with online harassment situations, and with problems at real life events. The final English version is now finished!
I'm wondering if you would be willing to help us translate content for these Training Modules into your language. We are targeting a minimum of ten languages for these modules, including the English original.
If the answer is yes, please let me know with a ping, or just get stuck in - either way, we would really appreciate your support! Joe Sutherland (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 18:12, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

words pronunciation in hebrew
editHi, I saw you wrote this tool pronuncify, and used it to upload recordings of words in Hebrew to commons. There is a project 'Lingua-Libre' - a web site where people can record a big amount of words Lingua-Libre , the site is [2] , (works only on firefox for me). I used it to record some words. Then I wrote a script link_words_recording.py that adds each record to the definition in the Hebrew Wiktionary if it exist. (I run it under Dafna3.bot) Shavtay (talk) 16:41, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Shavtay. It's good to see more interest in facilitating easier recording of pronunciation files. I took a quick look at Lingua-Libre, and it looks promising, though it would definitely need an English interface to be more globally useful (Personally I managed to use it in French, but I guess not everyone would). Another thing I'm looking for is a good way of organizing the workload and easing the distribution of it, i.e. easy ways to create large backlogs of words-to-be-recorded, and then ensuring no duplication of effort, perhaps by letting users 'claim' blocks of (say) 100 words at a time. Are you in touch with the LL team? Do you know if they're planning such a feature? That would have been my next effort in developing Pronuncify, if I had any time to devote to it (which unfortunately I currently don't). Ijon (talk) 15:54, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Come join Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women again! <3
editHello, Asaf! You receive this message because last year you took part in the CEE Women challenge. This year the challenge repeats, and it will take longer: from now until the end of May (about 10 weeks).
Please, feel invited to visit the page Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women and join the challenge again. Help have more notable women from Central and Eastern Europe in more language versions globally, including Hebrew. We again have a list of ideas for biographic articles of women from all over the CEE.
What is different this year is that now you can set your own minimal number of articles as a measure of your challenge (i don't advise you to challenge yourself with more than 70 ;) 10-20 is perfect!). Also, you can receive as a prize a postcard not only from Bulgaria (as in 2017), but also from a list of countries from CEE and around the world. Apart of being a receiver, you can also opt to be a sender of postcards from your country to some of the other participants! That would also be awesome!
Thank you in advance for any contribution you make to CEE Women, and for spreading the word in your local wiki community! Love, Vassia / →Spiritia 18:37, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Rivonia Trial
editDear Ijon, I heard from User:Discott that you would try to get official permission from the Mandela Foundation to include the Rivonia Diary files into Wikimedia Commons (again). As you know, prolific users like Josve05a and JuTa were quick to get rid of all the files, despite warnings by others. If you need any help with contacting the Mandela Foundation, please let me know. Vysotsky (talk) 09:44, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- Done already. I should have looked better. Thanx! Vysotsky (talk) 09:51, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for offering, anyway! :) Ijon (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Africa
editHi Asaf
I propose to use the natural traffic that goes to the Commons WLA main page to host a "call to action" page using Glamify. You may see a draft here : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2017/Call_to_action
what do you think ?
I'd like your help to make your tool as easy as possible to use in that call :)
From our currents stats, most language sources we can use are English, French and Arabic (this is where most of the images are currently used). I'd like to propose by default a set of languages target... English, French, Arabic, Portuguese and the African languages (that's roughly a dozen, see here : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/16_African_Women_Translate-a-thon. Apparently, Glamify only take one line at a time (not 7...) and I'd like a regular update (maybe once a week ?). Also, the output of your tool can not be directly reused on Commons in copy paste mode because the links are set up for meta. So... do you think that by any chance you might consider giving the call a little bit of help with some tweaking that would fix that ? For example with an automatic update of a bunch of pre-defined queries once a week, with an output directly suitable for Commons ?
Thanks
Anthere (talk) 10:46, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- Bonjour Anthere! These are good ideas! I'm afraid I probably won't have time to improve GLAMify in time for WLA (assuming it starts in October? I couldn't find definite information re 2018.) If anyone else would like to offer patches (pull requests), I'm happy to review them and merge them. If no one else is available, you can perhaps ping me in two weeks to see if I might find some time to make these improvements. Ijon (talk) 19:02, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- there will be no WLA in (October) 2018. We agreed to push it a little bit later so as to better accommodate the schedule of WLM and WLE. So we are rather looking for organisation of the contest in January-February 2019. That is... if we find some funding. So for 2019 (providing 2019 happens), this leaves some free time to actually improve the system !
- In any cases, I set up the system to operate now for the former WLAs (2014-2017). I can do some soft updates from time to time by hand. By no means perfect, but can work. I will be making a call for volunteers to help you. If can not find them, will ping you back.
- Cheers Anthere (talk) 18:09, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Country and city attribution of geolocated item
editI am trying to make use of GeoData API to perform aforementioned task.
I found GeoData API very clean, simple and user friendly in retrieving various data according to geo location of the item. But there are difficulties with retrieving country/city affiliation of the item. While country can theoretically be get in a single request (also not always but only if being specified and not in name format but rather by its alphabetic designation), the city is possible to be get only for items which are cities by themselves. Let's imagine I want to determine in one request providing the coordinates of the Sagrada Familia temple the name of the item and that it is located in Barcelona, Spain. As far as I understood there is no way to do that. From the second hand this information does exist for every geo tagged item and is available for example through WikiData SPARQL query service. But then I'll need to perform a second request to WikiData which I would have liked to avoid by all means.
Looking on advice on the optimal strategy to perform the desired. If not is it possible to add the country/city attributes to GeoData list=geosearch attributes? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chainastole (talk)
- @Chainastole: I'm afraid I don't know the GeoData API myself, and am not sure I quite understood your question. I suggest you ask in the #mediawiki or #wikimedia-tech channels on IRC if you can, or on one of the technical mailing lists, where you would have access to many more minds and background than just my own on this talk page. Ijon (talk) 18:56, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Chainastole: there is also experimental dev support forum if you are not comfortable with IRC. --Papuass (talk) 11:34, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
The Community Wishlist Survey
editHi,
You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.
You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Public Speakers
editThis is not a page maintained by the WMF, so you have no business there. It's a page where anyone who is a speaker can create an entry. Other users have no say in this, just as they can't overrule an entry of someone coming to a wikimeet. Cheers, Guido den Broeder (talk) 22:52, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, Guido. I have rolled back your edit based on the controversy mentioned in the talk page. Your aggressive response here -- ignoring the fact I am a longtime Wikipedia volunteer quite apart of, and long before, my job at the Foundation -- suggests you are uncollaborative and leads me to give credence to The Banner's concerns, and to support Nemo's rejection of your edit. Nonetheless, this remains only my opinion, as one volunteer, not WMF's opinion or a WMF action, and other Meta contributors are welcome to weigh in, as always.
- I have made these edits, and am making this response, as a volunteer contributing to Meta, and nothing else. Your undoing of my edit that stated facts about that page -- that it is unmaintained, that the roles mentioned in it are not current -- also smacks of an insistence on controlling the narrative that is inappropriate on a wiki. I encourage you to undo yourself at once. Ijon (talk) 23:28, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- I am indeed controlling the page, as representative of the speakers. Your qualification of the list as largely outdated was totally unacceptable. Don't do this again. Ijon, if you think the page needs maintenance, contact the individual speakers on the list. No status is needed for that. Guido den Broeder (talk) 23:45, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- For Nemo and TheBanner, these are just revenge edits, not their true opinions. They're not really interested in this page. They both tried to bully me before, lost, and have been stalking me since. Nemo is a total embarassment with his deliberate copyright violations spanning more than a decade. TheBanner changes to a new account whenever he feels he got blocked too often. The list, meanwhile, is explicitly defined as self-generated. This means that removing a speaker without their consent is not allowed. Guido den Broeder (talk) 00:01, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Well, no, you are most definitely not "controlling the page". No single user is, and your assertion to the contrary again shows a fundamental failure to embrace wiki collaborative values. So is your presumption to represent "the speakers", implicitly excluding me. I dare guess I have done more public speaking about Wikipedia than you have, in fact. (Even though I never added myself to that page).
- Your presumption to determine what is and isn't other people's "true opinions" does not merit a response.
- To your baseless claim I am mistaken in calling the page outdated, especially in terms of roles and positions held, I will offer this refutation:
- Eloquence is no longer WMF staff
- Frank Schulenburg is no longer WMF staff
- Piotrus has been living in Korea for years now
- Steven Walling is no longer WMF staff
- Stu West is no longer a WMF board member
- These are five out of date listings in just the US section of the list. QED. Ijon (talk) 09:23, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- The page should just be marked historical at this point, and further disruption by Guido should be reported at Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. Nihlus 09:31, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Ijon, have you contacted them to ask them to update their entry? Guido den Broeder (talk) 16:32, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Nice try moving the goalposts! I said it was out of date; you said that's untrue; I proved it is true; you change the question, instead of admitting you were wrong and apologizing. Your level of intellectual honesty is clear. Ijon (talk) 19:31, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- I take that as a 'no'. Guido den Broeder (talk) 20:09, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- There are seventy-three entries and you found a few details in need of an update. There were four major updates in 2018 alone. That doesn't qualify as 'It is not actively maintained, and is significantly out of date, with most roles and positions mentioned only correct as of 2010-2011 or earlier.' Guido den Broeder (talk) 20:27, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

"Who Wrote That" project update
editHello. I'm reaching out to you as you participated in the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for "Who Wrote That" project (previously known as "Blame Tool"). The Community Tech team is kicking things off on the project and we have an early-stage mockup available for you to look at. I invite you to follow that project page, where I will be posting periodic status updates for the project. You are also welcome to provide your thoughts on the talk page. The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support
editHello. You are receiving this message because you kindly helped with affiliates-related translations in the past. The movement needs you again! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.
A Translation Central is available to help keen translators like you figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome. While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :)
Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:19, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Grants wiki
editWikimedia_wikis#Private_Wikis lists "grantswiki" as "defunct; to merge back into meta internal can be done w/ a short review". In July 2013, you wrote "I am happy to do this review." Did anything come of that? Should the wiki be marked as merged in the list?
Thanks. --Yair rand (talk) 02:19, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
- I had, yes. I found nothing of use or relevance. It's mostly some drafts of ancient (very small) grant proposals the Foundation was applying for from other funders. I think it can be merged into Meta, or even deleted. Ijon (talk) 09:37, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group
edit(You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)
Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.
As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.
In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:
Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected].
Best regards,
The Wikimedia LGBTQ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.
We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

Affiliations Committee (AffCom) Call for candidates - January 2022
editTranslations are available.
The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups – is looking for new members!
The main role of the AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and update the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees as well as advise them on issues connected to chapters, thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.
The committee consists of five to fifteen members, selected at least once every year, to serve two-year terms.
Being a part of the AffCom requires communication with volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to understand legal texts. We look for a mix of different skill sets in our members.
- Responsibilities
- Availability of up to 5-8 hours per month
- Participate in monthly one and two-hour voice/video meetings
- Commitment to carry out assigned tasks in a given time.
- Facilitate and support communications
- Affiliate Support and growth
- Required and Recommended Abilities, Skills, Knowledge for Affiliations Committee Members
Strong interpersonal relationship among members of the committee and also with the Wikimedia community members. Across all committee members, there are additional relevant skills as well as requirements which help to support the committee and its sustainability which include both required and relevant general skills
- Required
- Fluency in English
- Availability of up to 5 hours per week, and the time to participate in a monthly one and two-hour voice/video meetings.
- Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.

- Relevant for all members
- Public Communications (English writing and speaking skills)
- Skills in other languages are a major plus.
- Understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation.
- Documentation practices
- Interviewing experience
- Experience with, or in, an active affiliate is a major plus.
- Teamwork: Project and people management skills to coordinate and collaborate with different parties on a shared plan and see it through to completion.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to evaluate various solutions, consider multiple interests and points of view, revisit unresolved issues, seek compromise and work and communicate across languages and cultures.
Given the expectations for maintaining the course in 2022 and preparing for potential 2022 transitions as part of the Movement Strategy implementation process, it is important that we are also clear about two different skill sets critical to committee support at this time. The first skillset is oriented to understanding affiliate dynamics and organizational development patterns to successfully process affiliate applications for recognition; the other is oriented to conflict prevention and intervention support for affiliates in conflict.
- Relevant to Affiliate Recognitions
- Administration & Attention to detail
- Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliation, and similar topics.
- Awareness of the affiliates ecosystem and models and understanding of community building, organizational development, and group dynamics
- Relevant to Conflict Prevention & Intervention
- Communication skills for active listening, clear instruction and turn-taking.
- Stress Management skills for maintaining patience and positivity
- Emotional intelligence to maintain awareness of emotions of oneself and others to practice empathy, impartiality, and mutual respect.
- Facilitation, negotiation, and mediation skills to guide diverse individuals and groups toward cooperation.
- Ability to work within a team
Do you have relevant skills and interest to support movement affiliates?
We are looking for people who are excited by the challenge of empowering volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission around the world. In exchange, committee members will gain the experience of supporting their world-wide colleagues to develop their communities as well as personal development in guiding organizational development, facilitating affiliate partnerships, and professional communications.
- Selection process
As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2022 member selection process will include a public review and comment period and a self-assessment survey for candidates to share their skills and their experience. This self-assessment information will help the committee to identify the skill sets relevant and supportive to our affiliate support processes. We invite you to apply for membership to the committee and join us in supporting the affiliates. The data shared in the self-assessment will only be made available to the committee and the relevant staff support. The nomination, candidate Q&A, and endorsements will still take place posted on Meta for public review at January 2022 page. Here the global community is welcome to provide comments and feedback about each candidate.
Once the nomination window closes 31 January 2022, the sitting members who are not candidates for re-election in this cycle will deliberate and then vote, taking into account all inputs from the meta page, self-assessment, advisors, Wikimedia Foundation staff and board liaisons, and committee member discussion.
A final decision will be made in late-February 2022, with new members to be notified for onboarding in February.
- How to apply
If you are interested in joining the committee, please:
Step 1. Post your application on the nomination page by 31 January 2022. Your application must include the following information:
- Your full name and Wikimedia username
- A statement describing your relevant education, experience, abilities, skills, knowledge, availability, and motivation for joining the committee.
Step 2. Complete the self-assessment survey between January 1, 2021 and January 31, 2021.
- The privacy statement that applies to the survey can be found here.
- NOTE: The survey will take 15 mins. Please do not close your browser. If you need a break, you are advised to keep the browser open. In case of losing the link, please reach out to mkaur-ctr wikimedia.org
- This survey must be completed before Steps 3 & 4, as it will provide more background as to the type of work and expectations of members of AffCom.
Step 3. Answers the following questions:
- NOTE: Questions 1-3 are required for all candidates.
- Question 4 & 5 should be answered by those interested in joining the Recognitions subcommittee.
- Question 6 & 7 should be answered by those interested in joining the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee.
- If you are willing to nominate yourself for both subcommittees, answer all questions.
- What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?
- AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?
- Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?
- If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think makes a group of Wikimedians ready to function together as an affiliate?
- If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates?
- If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe your experience working with conflicts resolution.
- If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe how you have helped build consensus and support diversity.
Step 4. Once you have completed the above, send an email announcing your application to affcom wikimedia.org before the application deadline.

Other Tasks: Advisors can be engaged to address a specific need. Such engagements are usually short-lived and are disbanded as soon as their specific goals are met.
- Key skills
We look for a healthy mix of different skill sets in our advisors, including the following key skills and experience:
- Strong understanding of the structure and work of Wikimedia affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation.
- Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliation, and similar topics.
- Availability of up to 2 hours per week, and the time to participate in a monthly two-hour voice/video meeting
- International orientation and ability to work and communicate with other languages and cultures.
- Knowledge of different legal systems and experience in community building and organizing are a plus.
- Fluency in English is required; skills in other languages are a major plus.
- Experience with or in an active Wikimedia affiliate is a major plus.
- Strong track record of effective collaboration (such as evidenced skills at facilitation, mediation, negotiation, and so forth) is a major plus.
- Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.
- Selection process
As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2022 advisors selection process will include a public review and comment period. All applications must be posted on Meta between January 01 and January 31, 2022 at Affiliations Committee/Advisors/2022, and the community will be invited to provide comments and feedback about each candidate. At the end of the nomination period, the applications will be voted on by the members of the committee, taking into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisors, Wikimedia Foundation staff and board liaisons, and the community. A final decision will be made in February 2022, with new advisors expected to begin later that month.
- How to apply
If you are interested in advising the committee, please submit your candidacy on Affiliations Committee/Advisors/2022 between January 01 to January 31, 2022. Your application must include the following information:
- Your full name and Wikimedia username
- A statement describing your relevant experience, skills, and motivation for joining the committee as an advisor.
- The advisor role you would like to serve
- Answers to the following three questions:
- How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
- What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
- What do you feel you will bring as an advisor to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the committee. We are happy to chat or have a phone call with anyone about our work if this helps them decide to apply. Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you are interested!
On behalf of the committee,
Please advise whether and how to add email to wikimedia-l listserv
editHi! I just completed and submitted my first two annual reports for the H-GAPS User Group. When I went to announce the postings over the wikimedia-l list (as the instructions above the portal indicate), my message bounced. I tried again from a different email. In bounce cases, the error was that the sending address was not recognized as being a member of the list. Do you suggest that we add another email for me to the listserv? I have an @hgaps.org email that would be my first choice. I believe that it is either a version of my university email, or a personal Gmail, that may already be attached to the list. The university one can be a headache for this sort of thing -- the mail server has changed names and platforms several times in the 16 years I have been here. The @hgaps.org is unlikely to change as much, and reflects my affiliation better for the purposes of the user group. Also, as I was researching how to contact a list admin about this, I saw on the talk page guidelines suggesting no HTML in the messages. My message did include HTML (I included links so that people could comment directly on the reports, should they so desire). If this is a faux pas or bad idea, let me know, and I will send a vanilla plain text version instead. Thanks, tons, for the guidance and for all you are doing for the community! Eyoungstrom (talk) 18:04, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, Eyoungstrom. The Wikimedia-l list gets lots of spam, so it categorically refuses mail from non-subscribers. To get your message through it needs to be sent from an address currently subscribed to the mailing list. (You can easily manage your subscription.)
- If it is the first message ever from this subscribed address, it will be held for manual moderation (not rejected), and one of the list-admins would have to manually let it through. (Without this measure, anyone could have spammed the thousands of subscribers of the list by just subscribing and sending the spam.)
- You are very welcome to subscribe to the list and send your user group report. We will let it through, and future email from you should go through automatically. Ijon (talk) 00:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! Very clear next steps. I have subscribed, verified my account, and forwarded the reports. Very much appreciated! Eyoungstrom (talk) 14:23, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Big news, View it! users! Over the last two months, View it! has been expanded to two versions. Our new full version shows images within the wiki content page, and the "View" tab displays a gallery of images without leaving the site you are on, as you can see at right. We have rebranded the original version, which utilizes the "View" tab to link to our Toolforge search results, to "Lite". We invite you to switch to full version and try it out! Major changes:

Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference
editWikimedia LGBT User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.
The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.
If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.
Registration for the online event is free and is open until Wednesday May 10th at 18:00 UTC, for safety protocol. Late event registration approval and event access denial is at the discretion of organizers.
More information, and registration details, may be found on Meta at QW2023

Luthor description
editHi! Could you please add some description to the Luthor homepage? Currently users have no idea what they log into unless they click on the source code link and find the README in GitLab. Probably most non-technical users won’t click on a link labelled “Source code”. Thanks in advance! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:23, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: sure! Done Ijon (talk) 20:12, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Luthor feedback
editHi Asaf,
Luthor is a very good tool, and I offer the following suggestions meaning no criticism:
- make results case-sensitive (for "eat", do not offer "... How Animals Eat by Herman LeRoy Fairchild ...")
- match stings exactly; do not offer plurals, verb forms, etc. (for "eat", do not offer "Reasons for not eating animal food..."
- for multi-word lexemes, such as "all aboard", do not offer stings which split the words, like "...Bill Kisseck leaped aboard the lugger that lay at the mouth of the harbor. His six men followed him. "See all clear," he shouted to Danny..."
(all based on usage in English). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:53, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for this feedback! These are all useful things to add and improve. I will work on them when next I make time to devote to this tool. Meanwhile, tracking them on Phab:

Luthor colour
editHi Asaf,
Can you make the colour (sentence example part) more soft? The colour is too bright to people with sensitive eyes. Thank you! Arupako (talk) 10:26, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T350324
- @Arupako: Yes, I can do that. I am making a note on Phabricator and will get to it when I next find time to improve the tool. Ijon (talk) 00:17, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! Arupako (talk) 11:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Empty suggestions of Luthor
editHi Asaf. Luthor suggests many empty lexemes that do not have any similar words in Wikisource. Could you please fix it to only suggest lexemes if they have a value in Wikisource? I am using it for Persian lexemes. Thanks Darafsh (talk) 05:35, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, that's a very good idea! I am adding it to the backlog, but it is unlikely I'll find time to improve Luthor in the coming few weeks. I will make some public posts when I do, and will also notify people who have used the tool extensively. Ijon (talk) 11:43, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
