WikiEarth is a proposal for a new Wikimedia project. WikiEarth is a place for people who like contributing to Google Maps Local Guides programs and Google Maps Trusted Photographer on street view and open street map mappers to be part of a Wikimedia project. There would be an API for open source mapping data. The API would be used for routing, map image making and generation, and Geographical information systems. There would be points such as a T-shaped intersection and a four-way intersection with a stop sign and/or stoplight. There would be edges that represent edges in a graph that would be used for routing algorithms such as A*, Dijkstra's algorithm, and Bellman-Ford. The edges would represent sidewalks and roads as line segments. The edges would be composed of gps trace data. A sequence of gps coordinates with latitude, longitude, and elevation would be connected to form an edge or arc from an intersection. The intersections would be the nodes and vertices in the graph and the edges would be arcs in directed and mixed graphs and undirected edges.

This is a proposal for a new Wikimedia sister project.

Details of the proposal
Project descriptionA Wikimedia mapping effort free for all people for all time. WikiData does not have a Wikimedia mapping project it can link to. In addition, this would fill a need for Wikipedia, WikiProject Geography, and WikiVoyages. Companies that use open street map data could also use WikiEarth mapping data.
Is it a multilingual wiki?one multilingual wiki
Potential number of languagesthe wiki will have place names in different languages but mostly be numerical coordinate data and images.
Proposed taglineone map free for all people for all time
Proposed URLwikiearth.org
Technical requirements
New features to requiregeoid support for WGS 84 and EGM 96 or ideally EGM 2008 and EGM 2020 which incorporate updated gravity data. support for geotagged photos and uploading. support for nodes that represent intersections and edges that represent geo path segments that can be used for travel directions and arc routing applications. an api that can be used to integrate this similar to how open street map is integrated in many applications. support for editing the map. geoimagery data from Sentinel 2.

The WikiEarth project would be used by organizations that need more than Google Map's $200 free daily quota. GPS data from walking and driving and bicylcing would be used to make the map topographically accurate. The project would be integrated with Wikipedia and Wikiproject Geography. Wikiproject Geography articles would be linked to WikiEarth places. Wikidata would link to WikiEarth information. There is no open source mapping project Wikiproject with the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikidata does not accept links to open street map pages because they are unstable and moved and deleted and missing often. Integrating WikiEarth as a project would fulfill needs of WikiData, WikiVoyages, and Wikipedia and Wikiproject Geography. WikiEarth is an open source mapping project.

WikiEarth would include roads, street, cities, houses, stadiums, skyscrapers, government buildings, parks, and neighborhoods. WikiEarth would integrate geographical applications of graph theory and arc routing and vehicle routing.

Wikiearth would have nodes with latitude and longitude and elevation. It would function similar to Google maps, which is a closed source propreitary API. Open street map has open source mapping functionality but adding a global mapping functionality as a Wikiproject would make geographical information on Wikipedia easier because it would be a Wikimedia Foundation project.

There would be applications for arc routing problems. The edges would have costs and weights associated with them which obey the triangle equality which would be useful for designing routing algorithms for arc routing problems and chinese postman problems and capacitated arc routing problems and traveling salesman problems and snow plowing and winter road maintenence and salt spreading and newspaper delivery and meter reading and school bus routing and police car security guard patrol and mailman and postman delivery of packages and mail and garbage collection and streetsweeping. This network of graphs would be represented by roads for vehicles such as streetsweepers, winter road maintence vehicles and salt spreaders, meter reading trucks that can read meters with a radio frequency identification tag when they are in a close enough range as they drive by, police cars for patrolling, and school buses. Edges representing sidewalks would be used for postal services and newspaper delivery and people interested in finding the shortest walk around their neighborhood that covers every walk at least once in a reasonable amount of time.

Why this project shouldn't be combined with any other Wikimedia Project

edit
  • Open StreetMap is a good free open source map but is not as reliable as Wikidata and other Wikiprojects, for example Wikidata does not accept links to Open street map because the links are constantly changing and moving and so avoid link rot and dead links, it is unwise to put Open street map links on Wikidata. source https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:OpenStreetMap
  • WikiVogages does not include mapping information for geography and focuses on travel ideas.
  • Wikimedia Commons and Wikiproject Geography are places for photography and geographical information. There is not a Wikiproject for making maps yet.

  7. JJohnson1701 - definitely. Something where we can pull up a map of, say, England, and click on the language links to see the names in foreign languages, and click on that language's article on that city, village, or whatever. That'd be awesome. Perhaps it would need a list of the places, perhaps in system messages, and then a translation as well.
  8. JosN A Wikiatlas exists on Commons already. That could be transferred to a new Wikiearth, Wikiatlas or whatever. A atlas with a lot of information does not seem logical to me for Commons, so, a new wiki would be preffered, I guess.
  9. User:WikiEarth I really like the idea of having a wiki atlas, even before I saw this proposal. I made my own wiki called wikiearth if you want to check it out.

  12. TheFearow Seems great - in a wiki environment, we can provide some fantastic detail on places not otherwise discussed in traditional atlases.
