Cookie Policy – mega.io
This Cookie Policy applies to MEGA’s public website at https://mega.io (our ‘Website’).
For information on MEGA’s cookie policy for logged in use of its cloud storage platform and other services at https://mega.nz, click here.
MEGA uses analytics cookies and a technology similar to cookies called ‘localStorage’ to provide, improve and protect our Website.
We also use certain marketing tracking technologies.
What is localStorage?
LocalStorage is a feature that enables your web browser to save a small amount of data when you access our Website. It allows important information to be stored locally to improve your experience on our Website.
When you visit our Website, localStorage stores the information set out below. MEGA does not have access to any information stored via localStorage on your device.
Essential information (‘essential cookies’)
LocalStorage stores information about your cookies settings so we can comply with privacy laws. For this reason, localStorage does not require consent to save that information.
Non-essential information (‘preference cookies’)
LocalStorage also stores information about your preferences:
- Which language you’ve selected and whether you’ve selected a dark or light theme so you don’t have to adjust those settings every time you visit our Website; and
- When you log into your MEGA account (at www.mega.nz) and also open our Website in a different tab, so the Website knows your first name, avatar settings and type of MEGA plan you use. This is to enable you to go directly from our Website to your MEGA account.
That information is not strictly necessary to access our Website. By default, localStorage will not remember that information. It will only do so if you opt in via the Cookie banner.
What are analytics cookies?
An analytics cookie is a small data file which will download onto your device. It helps us to understand how you engage with our Website by sending us usage statistics that we can use to improve our Website. Not accepting these cookies means we will have less data available to make improvements.
We use analytics cookies to:
- Identify the parts of our Website that you use and how well different parts of our Website function; and
- Monitor any changes we make to our Website to see if they improve your user experience.
We use Google Analytics 4 but do not allow Google to use the analytics data to improve Google’s own products and services. Also, Google anonymises your IP address: it will not log or store your IP address in any way. For more information on how Google handles analytics data, please visit how Google handles analytics data – see in particular clause 6.
We also use the HubSpot analytics cookies to provide you with an improved, more personalised experience on the Website. You can learn more about HubSpot analytics cookies here: HubSpot analytics cookies.
Also, we only retain analytics data for as long as we need it. After that, we delete it.
Analytics cookies are not essential. By default, they are disabled. An analytics cookie will only download onto your device if you opt in via the Cookie banner.
Marketing tracking technologies
We use various tracking technologies for marketing purposes, including Google Tag Manager, Campaign Manager, HubSpot tracking code and Meta (Facebook) Pixel.
These technologies are embedded within our web pages. Unlike localStorage or analytics cookies, these tracking technologies don’t store data in your web browser or device. Instead, they use small pieces of code („tags“ and „pixels“) that collect and send data about your interactions with our Website.
These technologies allow us to:
- Collect information about your device and behaviour on our Website;
- Track your interactions across different devices and marketing channels;
- Measure the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns; and
- Deliver targeted advertisements for our products and services.
Marketing tracking is not essential. By default, it is disabled. It will only load if you opt in via the Cookie banner.
Managing cookies
When you access our Website for the first time, or when we start using new non-essential cookies for the first time, you will be shown a brief message explaining what we use essential and non-essential cookies for, including preference, analytics and marketing cookies. You can accept or refuse the use of non-essential cookies on our Website from this message. Your choice will be saved so that the next time you access our Website you will not see the same message again. You can always adjust the choice you have selected at any time by accessing the Cookie Settings page again, here, or from the link in the footer of our Website.
For more information on how MEGA handles your personal data, please see our Privacy and Data Policy. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
