Uncovering my family’s pictures was a shock. I’d always thought of us as the very definition of posh — always elegant and fashionable. And the photos don’t contradict that. Everybody’s well-dressed, and some truly are elegant.
No, what disturbs me isn’t the clothes. It’s the skin. The photos show clearly that here and there in our family tree, there were individuals with skin tones noticeably darker than the rest. Were those suntans? Or…
I can’t bear to think of the other possibility.
