Six eager Moroccan high school students, set to compete in the 2024 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in England, were unable to attend due to visa application delays. The Moroccan Mathematical Community (MMC) expressed deep regret for the students who trained rigorously for three years. “It turns out that some responsible individuals, most likely at the National Center for Pedagogical Innovation and Experimentation (CNIPE), made a shocking mistake by forgetting to process the visas for the participant students,” a source told Morocco World News.
Former Moroccan Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel was elected Vice President of the International #Olympic Committee (IOC) during a meeting in Paris on Wednesday. El Moutawakel previously held this position from 2012 to 2016 and has served on the IOC Executive Board during two terms, from 2008 to 2012 and from 2020 to 2023. She made history as the first Moroccan and Arab woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She achieved this feat in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer #Olympics.

The Algerian regime, the primary support of the separatist Polisario Front, has received a significant blow along with the African Union’s decision this week to exclude the separatist group from meetings between the continental organization and its international partners. This latest development was acted on July 19 as the two-day 45th session of the African Union Executive Council, which convened in Accra on July 18-19, overwhelmingly decided, with (52 votes in favor out of 54) to exclude the separatist group from the pan-African body’s meetings with international partners. Not surprisingly, the decision shocked and outraged the Polisario leadership and the separatist group’s devout supporters and sponsors. For observers, the African bloc’s decision does not only point to the alarmingly waning support for the separatist group’s dream of creating an independent state in the Western Sahara region in southern Morocco.
