Motivation
editThe Washington Flora Checklist aims to be a complete list of the native and naturalized vascular plants of Washington State, with current classifications, nomenclature and synonymy. The checklist currently contains 3,819 accepted terminal taxa, of which 2,671 are native. Because the formatter for families and species is different, I am proposing two properties, one for families and one for species. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 20:32, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- Comment. Instead of using the alphabetical IDs, I would use the numerical ones.
31168
instead ofAsplenium trichomanes
for Asplenium trichomanes (Q902211). formatter URL (P1630) would then behttps://biology.burke.washington.edu/herbarium/waflora/checklist.php?Taxon=wd&ID=$1
instead of the current value. Thierry Caro (talk) 17:05, 24 March 2021 (UTC)- @Thierry Caro: Thank you for providing the formatter. I tried to figure out how to format it using the numerical IDs and could not figure it out. I have revised the proposal. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:33, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Support The new formatter works for genera too. --Succu (talk) 18:40, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Succu: It also works for families, so I've added both a genus and family example and changed the property name and description. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 19:34, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- @UWashPrincipalCataloger: Yes, I checked the dataset in more detail. So Wikidata:Property_proposal/Natural_science#Washington_Flora_Checklist_family_ID should be withdrawn. BTW: my bot can add the ids. --Succu (talk) 19:47, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Info Looks like there are only webpages for accepted taxa. E.g. Hydropeltidaceae a synonym of Cabombaceae --Succu (talk) 21:51, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Any thougths Pteropotamus, Emwille, Thierry Caro, UWashPrincipalCataloger, Crystal Clements, University of Washington Libraries, Jala360? --Succu (talk) 20:53, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- I don't see this as a problem. I would just include IDs for the items for accepted taxa, and not put an ID on the synonyms, since the link would not resolve to anything useful. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 21:36, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- Question Is there a reason why dereferenceable ID's for synonyms would be necessary Succu? I think adding IDs just for the items for accepted taxa is ok. Can we be sure that anyone implementing this property will ignore the ID's for non-accepted taxa/synonyms UWashPrincipalCataloger? --Crystal Clements, University of Washington Libraries (talk) 15:01, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- I never suggested that, Crystal Clements. Some websites use redirects from a synonym to the accepted raxon name. There is another problem; The downloadable dataset is outdated (2018-9-14), It contains over 15,000 accepted taxon names. A lot more than the staticstic page counts. There are around 2400 updates since the datafile was released. Probably the downloadable dataset should not used to provide the ids. --Succu (talk) 17:47, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, now I understand what you were saying. How will the issues you point out affect data creators who want to add these identifiers to Wikidata items? Wouldn't they generally be using the search interface on the website, which is presumably up to date? --Crystal Clements, University of Washington Libraries (talk) 22:01, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- I only intend to add these one by one, using the website. I have no intention of using any downloadable set, which is beyond my technical skills anyway. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 02:25, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
