The Star of the Contest (Japanese: コンテストに輝く光 Shining Light of the Contest) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Dawn & Turtwig.
During this event, players could earn Prize Coins from battles that could be used to draw items from a prize box pool. If the grand prize was drawn from the prize box, players could advance to the next prize pool. Extra Prize Coins were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
First run
The event first ran from May 28 to June 11, 2020. The "Dawn Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Dawn & Turtwig for the duration of the event.
The grand prizes in the Prize Box included area info for event story areas, sync orbs, and other power-up items. Prize Boosts could be activated before entering a battle area to triple the Battle Rewards obtained on victory. Players could have a maximum of three Prize Boosts available at any given time, with one Prize Boost being replenished every four hours. A Reward Boost Ticket could be used in place of a Reward Boost, should a player run out of stocked boosts.
On June 1, 2020, Challenge Wallace: Part 1 and Challenge Wallace: Part 2 were added to the event, available after completing all the story areas.
Second run
The event reran from June 24 to July 8, 2021. The "Triple Feature Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Dawn & Turtwig, Plumeria & Salazzle, and Lyra & Chikorita from June 21, 2021, and lasting until the end of the event.
The grand prizes in the Prize Box included area info for event story areas, 5★ Scout Tickets, Skill Spheres, co-op sync orbs, and a Support Move Candy Coin. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Challenge Wallace: Part 1, which could only be challenged once per day. Challenge Wallace: Part 2 did not return from the first run.
The player could battle using Dawn & Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra to obtain 0.6× bonus Prize Coins; Lyra & Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium to obtain 0.4× bonus Prize Coins; and Rosa & Snivy/Servine/Serperior to obtain 0.2× bonus Prize Coins.
Players would receive a medal for completing all the story areas in the event.
Plot
A sync pair contest is being held on Pasio, and Dawn and the player are entering. Shortly before it begins, Dawn helps calm the player's nerves before explaining the three rounds of the contest.
Dawn and the player participate in the visual competition, as do Fantina and Wallace. After the round, Dawn shows some uncertainty about her performance. Before the dance competition begins, she notes that Fantina is known as a talented dancer and a frequent contest participant in Sinnoh.
The four contestants complete the dance competition, after which Dawn praises Turtwig for its performance, Fantina comments on dancing, and Wallace expresses admiration for the many sync pairs on Pasio. The three also praise the player for their performance in the round. Before the final round, the "razzle-dazzle competition", the player asks how it will work, and the others explain that contestants need to impress the judges during a Pokémon battle. Just before the round begins, Dawn muses that the player will be the one to beat.
The four face each other in a Battle Royal-style battle. During the match, Wallace and his Sealeo impress with their water illusions, unnerving Dawn. The player cheers Dawn on, and, encouraged, she sends Turtwig against the pair.
After the final round, the four contestants line up in the stadium for the results. Fantina and Wallace are surprised by their rankings, as the player comes in second, and Dawn receives first place. Wallace and Fantina praise and congratulate the other two. Dawn admits to the player that she had been nervous and thanks to them for helping her.

We should totally sign up! You'll have such a good time! Plus, I've entered contests before back in Sinnoh, so I can show you the ropes! |

Attention, please: The sync pair contest will begin soon. All contestants, please make your way to the stage.
Dawn | It's almost time. You nervous? My legs are shaking!: Yikes! Just take slow, deep breaths! It'll help you calm down! N-n-no... I'm f-f-fine.: No, you're not! I can tell you're nervous! Just take some slow, deep breaths. It'll help you calm down! C'mon, just breathe after me! Inhaaaaale...and exhaaaaale... Inhaaaaale...and exhaaaaale... There, see? All better! All right, let's go over the rules of the contest. Sync pair contests are divided into three separate competitions: visual, dance, and razzle-dazzle. Your total points from all three competitions are added up, and whoever has the most points at the end wins! And unlike contests in other regions, here they'll be judging the bond between you and your Pokémon! Anyway, first up is the visual competition! My Turtwig is so awesome and adorable! I can't wait to show her off to everyone! What are we waiting for? Let's head to the stage! |

Dawn | That was over so fast! Did you put on a good show for the judges, <player>? You bet I did!: Nice! You might be more cut out for contests than we thought! I think I did all right with Turtwig, but... I dunno. I feel like I could have used my time better and REALLY shown off just how awesome and adorable she is! I wish I did a better job!: I know, right? Contests never go the way you expect them to. I think I did all right with Turtwig, but... I dunno, I feel like I could have used my time better and REALLY shown off just how awesome and adorable she is! |
The dance competition will begin soon. All contestants, please make your way to the stage.
Dawn | All right! Time to focus up and power through the next competition! I know you can do it!: Thanks! I'm rooting for you, too! I'm gonna win this thing!: Yeah, that's the spirit! Let's do our best out there! Oh, by the way, did you see that Fantina is here, too? Fantina is an accomplished dancer and a contest regular back in Sinnoh. We definitely need to be on our toes! |

(Dawn, Fantina, Wallace, and the player's Pokémon dance)
Dawn | Omigosh, Turtwig! That was amazing! You are the perfect partner! |
Fantina | Whenever and wherever, dance, dance, dance! If you dance all the time, the dancing at the contests, they become challenges no longer! |
Wallace | I must say, the sync pairs on Pasio are truly magnificent! My partner and I have found so many sources of inspiration here! We're sure to become even more spectacular now! |
Dawn | Hey, what did you think of the dance competition? |
Fantina | Fantina was breathtaking!: Oh, merci! But you, too, were fantastique! Très fantastique! Your partner is so cute and cool! Et aussi très pretty! |
Dawn | Fantina was breathtaking!: Yeah! I agree with Fantina! |
Wallace | Wallace was amazing!: Why, thank you! It seems my illusions have won me another fan! But you all were amazing, too! Your dances were positively spellbinding! |
Dawn | Wallace was amazing!: Yeah! I agree with Wallace! Out of all of us, I'd say you had the best dance chemistry with your Pokémon. But you'd better watch your back! I don't care if it's you, Fantina, or Wallace. I'm not gonna lose to anybody! |
The razzle-dazzle competition will begin soon. Contestants, please make your way to the stage.
Dawn | Well, no matter what happens, let's get out there and finish this! Hm? What's the matter? What's a razzle-dazzle competition?: Oh, that's right! I haven't explained what this competition is! Are we competing to see who can eat the most Razz Berries?: No? Why would you think that? Oh, that's right! I haven't explained what this competition is! |
Fantina | The razzle-dazzle competition is une compétition spécial exclusive to Pasio! |
Wallace | Contestants are judged on their dazzling display during a Pokémon battle! |
Dawn | In other words, we give everything we've got and show off what makes us shine in battle! It's been a really close contest so far, so we're gonna have to bring our A game! Fantina and Wallace are going to be tough opponents. But the one I really need to watch out for is... |
- Razzle 'Em and Dazzle 'Em!

Dawn | Thank you both! Congratulations, Dawn!: Thanks! But you deserve a congratulations, too! You came in second! That's awesome! Wooo! I took second place!: Congratulations, <player>! I'm proud to be your mentor! I can't believe you got second place in your first contest! That's amazing! I was so nervous, thinking that I had to prove to everybody how great Turtwig is. Heh, you and me both!: Then you must perform really well under pressure. Sometimes being nervous can help!: That's true. Some people can perform really well under pressure. It was only thanks to you that I was able to get my head on straight! I'm supposed to be your mentor, but you ended up helping me. Thanks, <player>! I might not be the best mentor, but you can always count on me! |
