Shed Tail (Japanese: しっぽきり Tail Shedding) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation IX.
Effect
- Main article: Substitute doll → Effect
Shed Tail creates a substitute at the cost of half of the user's maximum HP (rounded up), then switches the user out. The created substitute has 1/4 of the user's maximum HP. The Pokémon that switches in will then have the substitute. If the user is holding a Berry that would trigger in response to Shed Tail (such as a Sitrus Berry), it eats its held Berry before switching out.
Shed Tail fails (and will not switch the user out) if the user already has a substitute, if the user has no teammates to switch to, or if the user's HP is less than or equal to 50% of its maximum HP.
The substitute will not protect the sent out Pokémon against entry hazards.

Trivia
- The Japanese name of this move, しっぽきり Shippokiri, comes from the idiomatic expression 蜥蜴の尻尾切り tokage no shippo kiri (lit. cutting lizard's tail), which means to shift one's work or responsibility onto a subordinate.
