Release information

EX Series

This card was included in the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion with artwork by Nakaoka, first released in the Japanese Flight of Legends expansion. This print was later included in the EX Delta Species and EX Power Keepers expansions. In Japan, this print was also included in the Holon Research Tower Lightning Quarter Deck.

Diamond & Pearl Series

In Japan, Great Ball was reprinted in the limited World Champions Pack expansion, retaining its EX Series layout. The first itertation of Great Ball to feature the Diamond & Pearl Series layout appeared in the Stormfront expansion with new artwork by Kent Kanetsuna, which originated from Intense Fight in the Destroyed Sky expansion.

Black & White Series

Great Ball was released as an Item card in the Emerging Powers expansion with new artwork by 5ban Graphics, first released in the Japanese White Collection. This print was also included as part of the Boundaries Crossed expansion, and in each of the Japanese Battle Strength Decks, the Battle Theme Deck: Victini, the Battle Gift Set: Thundurus vs Tornadus, the Keldeo Battle Strength Deck, and the Mewtwo vs Genesect Deck Kit.

XY Series

During the XY Series, Great Ball was released with new artwork by Toyste Beach in the XY expansion, first released in the Japanese Xerneas and Yveltal Half Decks. An unnumbered XY-P Promotional print of this artwork was one of five Trainer cards available in conjunction with the Pokémon Card Game Deck Building Seminar event held as part of the Pokémon Center Pokémon Card Game School. This was present at participating Pokémon Centers in Japan from October 25 to November 16, 2014 and was open for elementary school-aged children. A 20-card set comprising two copies each of five Trainer cards plus 10 Energy cards could be purchased at Pokémon Centers during the event for ¥100. It was reprinted again in the BREAKpoint expansion, first released in the Japanese Emboar-EX vs Togekiss-EX Deck Kit.

Sun & Moon Series

Great Ball was reprinted during the Sun & Moon Series as part of the Sun & Moon expansion, first released in the Japanese Sun & Moon Starter Set, with new artwork by Ryo Ueda. It was later reprinted in both Half Decks of the Sun & Moon Trainer Kit: Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu and again in the Shining Legends expansion, originating from the Japanese subset of the same name. The Sun & Moon print later received four variants within the Sun & Moon Trainer Kit: Alolan Sandslash & Alolan Ninetales, two in each deck. The pairs have numbers in circles (gray for Alolan Sandslash and blue for Alolan Ninetales) in the bottom right of the card, both sets bearing the numbers 21 and 25. In Japan, it was reprinted again in the Sun & Moon Family Pokémon Card Game set.

Sword & Shield Series

Great Ball's first appearance during the Sword & Shield Series was in the Sword & Shield expansion, which originated from each of the Japanese V Starter Sets. This print has new artwork by Toyste Beach. In Japan, it was later reprinted in each of the V Starter Decks, in the Legendary Heartbeat subset, in the Blue Sky Stream expansion, in the Sword & Shield Family Pokémon Card Game set, in the Zacian & Zamazenta vs Eternatus Special Deck Set, in the Start Deck 100 (available in both Non Holofoil and Mirror Holofoil versions), and as a Mirror Holofoil in the Start Deck 100 CoroCoro Comic Version and Charizard VSTAR vs Rayquaza VMAX Special Deck Set. Outside Asia, it was reprinted in the special Champion's Path and Crown Zenith expansions.

Scarlet & Violet Series

Great Ball was reprinted during the Scarlet & Violet Series in the Paldea Evolved expansion, first released in the Japanese Triplet Beat subset with new artwork by Studio Bora Inc. It was reprinted in the Japanese ex Start Decks, the 2023 Pokémon World Championships Yokohama Deck: Pikachu, the Pokémon Card Game Battle Academy Deck Kit, and the Generations Start Decks.

Trivia

This card's effect is identical to the pre-Black & White Series prints of Master Ball.

Origin

The Great Ball is a type of Poké Ball in the Pokémon games, which has an improved capture rate over the regular Poké Ball. The fact that this card doesn't require a coin flip to work, whereas the Poké Ball card did, might be a reference to this fact.
