Carlo (Japanese: カルロ Carlo) is a character in Pokémon Duel. He is the player's AI assistant, and his twin AI is Another. His special move is the "Giant Miracle Smash".

Personality

Carlo has a generally upbeat and jolly demeanor, often cracking jokes with the player's friends. He cares deeply about the player, whom he calls "Master", showing concern for their well-being when they take risky bets, and celebrating their accomplishments.

Plot

Carlo and Another are the two halves of an advanced AI known as Gemini (Japanese: ジェミニ Gemini). Carlo is considered the "good" half of Gemini, while Another is considered the "bad" half - Carlo generally encourages friendship and trust, whereas Another promotes solitude and doubt. Gemini was designed for use in Pokémon Figure Game (PFG) matches by Number 7, who built upon an AI designed by his father, with the goal of producing an AI greater than anything his father ever made. Compared to normal AI devices issued to all PFG players, Gemini is capable of near-human thought, adaptability, and speech, as well as skills in hacking into lesser AI devices and computer systems. Each half of Gemini has identical access to these abilities.

Carlo and the player first meet at the PFG World Championships' opening ceremony, where the player first awakens the device. Luca and later Sharon, two of the friends the player makes at the tournament, note how oddly talkative Carlo is compared to other AI devices. When finishing duels against human opponents, Carlo tends to use a special move he calls "Giant Miracle Smash", which creates a bright flash of white light around the area.

As the player visits more hotels during the tournament, the Roger family makes efforts to obtain Carlo for themselves. In the process, Carlo begins to question his purpose, and reflects upon the bond he feels between himself and the player.

When the player reaches Elysium, they encounter Number 7, who seeks to observe Carlo's performance in duels. Faced with his creator, Carlo begins to question the purpose for which he was made, so Number 7 suggests accessing terminals throughout the building. These allow Carlo to see visions of Number 7's childhood - much to the scientist's surprise. When the player defeats Number 7 in a duel, the scientist is impressed by how strong Carlo has become - but soon after, a cyberattack hits Carmonte Island. Another has hacked into Jewel Tower's computer system, causing an island-wide blackout. Carlo, realizing that Another is responsible and recalling that they have the same abilities, hacks into Jewel Tower's system himself in an attempt to repair it. He finds clear signs of an intruder, but is led into a trap by Another, erasing Carlo's memory data. Power returns to the island, but Carlo reboots and greets the player as if they had only just met.

Trivia

  • In 2018, Pokémon Duel's April Fools joke was posting information for a fictitious Carlo figure on Twitter. This figure was Electric/Steel type, and was unable to move due to having 0 Move Points. It had an Ability and Data Disk with strange effects, such as outright winning the duel by using Shutdown to forcibly shut down the opponent's device or rewinding the duel by three turns with the Deep Learning Ability.
