  • Latvijas Banka convened a meeting with experts from the insurance sector to present its study on the protection of Latvian households through climate risk insurance.🏡 Industry representatives discussed the lessons learned from the severe storms and floods caused by heavy rains this summer, as well as potential solutions to address sector challenges, such as the use of language in financial documents.📑 Key findings from the study include: ✔ The number of insured homes is on the rise, and in 2023, half of all occupied homes were insured, providing financial protection against various risks for homeowners. ✔ Nearly all insurance policies include coverage for losses caused by natural disasters. ✔ Data indicates that in 2023, one in every five insurance claims for household insurance was related to natural disasters, with total payouts reaching 7.6 million euro. ✔ Across all types of insurance, including for legal entities, losses due to natural disasters amounted to 23.8 million euro. ✔ The July 2023 storms and floods have not yet been fully compensated, but as of mid-October, 18.6 million euro has already been paid out, with an additional 5.8 million euro in reserves. These figures underscore the need for continued improvements in climate risk management and strengthened household protection in Latvia.
