Kylie Jenner wasn’t the only one to positively surprise us this week, during Coperni Paris’s #PFW runway in Disneyland Paris… #California did too, with the Responsible Textile Recovery Act! 🌍 Following in the footsteps of similar legislation in France 🇫🇷 and The Netherlands 🇳🇱 , this groundbreaking bill addresses the staggering textile waste crisis, where over 17 million tons of waste are generated annually in the US, with a shocking 85% ending up in landfills. With this new law, fashion producers will be held accountable for their products' entire lifecycle. They must implement robust #recycling and #reuse programs, giving consumers access to convenient collection sites for their unwanted textiles—yes, even damaged pieces. This bold step forward transforms how we handle fashion waste, alleviating landfill pressures and promoting a circular economy where materials are reused and repurposed ♻️ At athena studio, we’re excited to see this shift but can’t help but wonder: are products really ready to be recycled? To make this law truly impactful, fashion pieces need to be designed for recyclability from the start. The good news? Our platform is here to help Californian fashion brands get ahead of the curve by integrating recyclability into their design process - let's work together to design fashion for the future! Throwback to an incredible event: REFASHIOND Ventures: The Industrial Transformation Fund's “The Industrial Transformation of Fashion” conference in Miami was a blast! The event kicked off with Lisa Morales-Hellebo's opening notes, which concluded with a big announcement: REFASHIOND OS is launching an AI automation platform to automate the most painful compliance reporting for US-factories 🏭. We’ve seen the demo, the platform looks 🔥 Join the waitlist now: https://lnkd.in/eSGug5cF Then we heard from what was probably one of the best curated lists of complementary start-ups in the fashion supply chain space we have ever seen: From product development (yas, athena studio!) and fit solutions (TrueToForm) …to sourcing optimisation (Sourcing Playground) …to next-level production planning (Pattern Project) and transparent factories (Arcstone | Digital Manufacturing) …to end of life textile recycling (Sortile, Osomtex®) and upcycling (Sneaker Impact) Plus the incredible material and process innovators Werewool and Jeanologia! The event concluded with an industry panel discussion on collaboration in scaling innovation, featuring PDS Limited, WM and Dzigner. Thank you again Lisa and Brian for inviting us over and for the great organisation! And great meeting all of you (and many more): Janice Tam, Heather Williams, Shruti Grover, Willson Deng, Constanza Gomez, Patricia Ermecheo, Moe Hachem, Chui-Lian Lee, Pepa Silla Casanova The Worldwide Supply Chain Federation Miami DDA Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College Mana Common TNYSCM #SCITMiami2024 #SCITMiami #Miami #IndustrialTransformation #SupplyChain #VentureCapital #Startups #Innovation #Fashion #FashionTech

Climate Week in NYC is in full swing. Is our progress keeping pace? 🌍🌿 To quote Maxine Bédat: “Everyone is talking about all the progress that is being made. But the progress always seems to be marginally less bad (and most of it neutralized by growth).” This rings true as Textile Exchange drops its latest report, and reveals a major challenge: global fiber production soared to 124 million tonnes in 2023, with virgin synthetics leading the pack. Polyester alone accounted for 57% of all fibers, and recycled synthetics are struggling to gain ground due to lower virgin material costs and recycling tech limitations. Despite industry pledges, with less than 1% of the global fibers from recycled textiles, textile-to-textile recycling is still a far-off dream. On a slightly brighter note, sustainable cotton held steady at 29% despite a small dip in cotton production, while certified wool, mohair, and cashmere are gaining traction, with these fibers claiming up to 47% market share. But with fiber production projected to hit 160 million tonnes by 2030, the question remains—are we truly making progress on our sustainability targets? 📚 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/e_8-iMB6 #MemesFriday #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek #NYC #MaterialsMarketReport #ClimateCrisis #TextileRevolution #FashionTech #CircularEconomy #SustainableFashion #Innovation

While New York is gearing up for another Climate Week, the question rises: is fashion doing enough? Amidst industry collabs, initiatives and bold targets, Rachel Cernansky concludes in Vogue Business that “fashion is still moving backwards on the climate.” Brands miss the point: real change needs a shift in business models and deeper, systemic changes. The gap between the necessary and actual investment for decarbonization is a staggering $1 trillion 🔥 Technologies to cut emissions are available across the supply chain, from agriculture to manufacturing, but they’re expensive, and many brands are hesitant to invest. Brands often highlight progress in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, like solar panels for office, but Scope 3 emissions, targeting the complete supply chain, remain stagnant. This shows that surface-level tweaks won’t cut it when the climate bill keeps piling up. If the fashion industry truly wants to meet its climate goals, it needs to address the root issues, not just make surface-level changes 🌍🌿 The runway for climate action is crowded, and it’s time for brands to step up or step aside. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dpAwSHWg #MemesFriday #FashionClimateWeek #ClimateWeek #NYClimateWeek#Sustainability #ClimateAction #FashionIndustry #EcoFriendly #GreenFashion #SupplyChain #Scope3Emissions #Decarbonization #FashionRevolution #ClimateGoals #FashionForGood #ApparelImpactInstitute

#DPP is at the tip of everyone’s tongue in fashion… but Katy Perry seems to be taking it to the next level! At the #VMAs in New York last week, Katy turned heads with a futuristic look, featuring a shredded white bralette, matching low-rise skirt and… nothing less than a QR code tattooed on her lower back. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a transformative system in the fashion industry, designed to provide transparency throughout a garment's lifecycle. By attaching digital records to products, DPPs track details from sourcing materials to manufacturing, distribution, and even disposal or recycling. This data empowers consumers to make informed, sustainable decisions while helping the industry move toward a circular economy 🌿 Brands, however, are struggling to get their data ready to be shared with customers. If you ask us, Katy Perry looks more than ready. Wonder what's behind her QR code? 👀 #MemesFriday #VMAs2024 #KatyPerry #FashionTech #SustainableFashion #DigitalProductPassport #DPP #EcoChic #RedCarpet #FutureOfFashion #FashionInnovation #GreenFashion #SmartBusiness #ESPR #ProductTransparency #FashionMeetsTech
