Here's what you might have missed lately: ▪ A startling revelation: only 16% of companies know all of their suppliers across all tiers. Nearly a third know less than 50% of their supply chain. This lack of visibility is a major hurdle in identifying and mitigating risks. ▪ The supply chain industry is experiencing a digital shake-up. The focus is on leveraging emerging technologies such as AI, distributed ledger technologies and low-code platforms. Organizations are striving to create more agile and responsive supply chains, driving value creation, cost reduction and improved shareholder value. ▪ Supply chain diversification is on the rise, especially within the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry. Companies are spreading their manufacturing across multiple vendors, shifting towards near-shoring or friend-shoring, and reducing lead times to adapt to changing consumer preferences. ▪ Micro-fulfillment centers are gaining traction. They aim to shorten delivery times by marrying the convenience of retail stores with the efficiency of online shopping. These highly automated centers can significantly reduce costs compared to traditional fulfillment centers. ▪ Geopolitical tensions are causing uncertainty, hindering investment and economic growth. Conflicts and wars tend to reduce global supply capacity, potentially leading to inflationary effects. Oil prices are predicted to decline this year. However, if the conflict in the Middle East escalates, oil prices could increase by 30% above our baseline forecast of €74 per barrel in 2024, potentially stoking global inflation and reducing global growth by 0.2 percentage point. ▪ The 20th annual Global Supply Chain Top 25 results were unveiled to the media on May 22 by Gartner, a market analysis and consulting company. Simon Bailey, VP Analyst, highlighted that the top 25 supply chain organizations this year have shown resilience in a challenging environment while focusing on sustainability. Bailey emphasized that leading supply chains have successfully incorporated ESG criteria into their operations, resulting in superior growth rates, improved returns on physical assets (ROPA) and increased margins.
