Last week, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania | #StandWithUkraine hosted the annual meeting of Lithuanian diplomatic and consular mission heads, bringing together leaders from over 60 missions worldwide. Alfredas Chmieliauskas, Chief AI Officer, data scientist, and one of Repsense's co-founders, presented the results of our study, "Lithuania's Image: Analysis of Dominant Narratives Globally and in Russia 2023-2024." The attendees showed great interest in the practical applications of our findings. There was a robust discussion on the importance of having a strategic and coordinated approach to counteract information and image challenges. It was emphasized that proactive storytelling and narrative creation are essential to enhance Lithuania's image internationally. They also acknowledged the urgent need to develop and implement a defensive strategy, moving beyond the belief that "the truth will prevail" to a more strategic and coordinated initiative to help the truth succeed. #Repsense #Lithuania #PublicDiplomacy #StrategicCommunication #NarrativeManagement

Do you know which themes about Lithuania dominated Russian media in May? Our latest research at Repsense, utilizing the advanced AI text and narrative analysis model #Adler, has revealed significant insights. In May, Lithuania emerged as the primary target of disinformation among the Baltic states in Russian media. Here are the top 5 dominant anti-Lithuanian themes in russian media in May: 1. Handling of Lithuania's relations with Russia and Belarus in the context of Ukraine. 2. Baltic States' cooperation in identifying Russia as a threat. 3. Statements by G. Landsbergis and other country representatives regarding threats posed by Russia to NATO. 4. Ministry of Foreign Affairs' communication to Russia concerning Lithuanian politicians on the wanted list. 5. Lithuania's sanctions on imports of goods from Russia and Belarus. These findings indicate a consistent effort to paint Lithuania in a negative light, leveraging both historical grievances and current geopolitical tensions. The portrayal of Lithuania as a puppet state and a threat to Russia serves to justify aggressive stances and actions against the country. Pro-Kremlin outlets like "Sputniknews" were particularly active, publishing numerous pieces that accused Lithuania of economic and social decline post-Soviet Union, among other negative portrayals. 🔗 Stay tuned for more detailed insights from our ongoing research and read the full article via the link in the comments. #Repsense #DisinformationAnalysis #MediaResearch #Lithuania #Russia

In May, over 3,000 hostile messages about Lithuania flooded Russian media, continuing to maintain a consistently high volume compared to neighboring Estonia. This surge in disinformation highlights Lithuania’s prominent role as a target of Russian propaganda, often painted as a significant threat to Russia. "One of the most dominant themes in the hostile country’s media was the actions of NATO countries in assisting Ukraine and Lithuania’s commitment to sending troops to Western Ukraine. Overall, Lithuania was depicted in various contexts as an accomplice in Ukraine’s military actions, with the icing on the cake being the propagandistic messages about a supposedly trained SBU agent in Rukla and the allegedly hidden number of Lithuanian casualties in Ukraine.“, states Repsense Head of Analytics, Rugilė Ereminaitė Analysis by “Repsense” using the AI model Adler revealed not only traditional anti-Lithuanian narratives but also new disinformation messages. This underscores the persistent targeting of Lithuania, contrasting with Estonia’s contextual mentions in broader Baltic news. Despite efforts, it’s crucial to stay vigilant against misinformation and its impact on regional dynamics. Mentions of Lithuania and Estonia in Russian media will be tracked and reported monthly. "In the Lithuanian media, there is practically no information about psychoactive substances - their effects, addiction potential, impact on health, relationships, and long-term effects. It's important to break the taboo, share more, and open up a discussion." - says one of Repsense's co-founders Alfredas Chmieliauskas. In late April, the series "Nebesvaik" premiered on the "Laisvės TV X" YouTube channel. The series aims to raise awareness about youth psychoactive substance use and educate the public. As part of this project, Alfredas analyzed 1005 articles from top Lithuanian news outlets to define how the media discusses 13 types of regulated substances. After conducting this in-depth analysis, it's evident that there's a pressing need for more accessible information and stronger prevention strategies. "It seems that hostile states A/B test propaganda and constantly search for resonating #narratives. Some stories don't even make it to the West, but others spread dangerously fast. This April, we saw a fake story about drone attacks on Minsk get picked up by a major US media website in just 3 days after it got published in a small Belarussian blog." shared Mykolas Katkus at #LOGIN conference. After analyzing more than 50,000 articles, we noticed a lot of troubling trends. As media gets more fragmented, it also gets easier to spread disinformation. Today, prioritizing reliable sources and fostering media literacy skills is more crucial than ever.
