Notatio Whyte ad hamaxam vaporariam ordine rotarum describendam a Friderico Methvan Whyte excogitata est[2] et parte prima saeculi 20 in usu esse ob opinionem in ephemeride American Engineer and Railroad Journal mense Decembri 1900 publicatam coepit. Systema Whyte numerum rotarum praecedentarum, tum numerum rotarum pellandi, tum numerum rotarum sequentium enumerat, qui numeri sunt abs hyphen separati.[3] Alia systemata describendi, ut Descriptio UIC vel systemata Gallica, Turcica, Helvetica, axes pro rotas enumerant.
