Notatio Whyte ad hamaxam vaporariam ordine rotarum describendam a Friderico Methvan Whyte excogitata est[2] et parte prima saeculi 20 in usu esse ob opinionem in ephemeride American Engineer and Railroad Journal mense Decembri 1900 publicatam coepit. Systema Whyte numerum rotarum praecedentarum, tum numerum rotarum pellandi, tum numerum rotarum sequentium enumerat, qui numeri sunt abs hyphen separati.[3] Alia systemata describendi, ut Descriptio UIC vel systemata Gallica, Turcica, Helvetica, axes pro rotas enumerant.

Ita hamaxa cum duabus axibus praecedentis (quattuor rotis), tribus axibus pellandi (sex rotis), et una axe sequenta (duabus rotis) est descripta ut 4-6-2.

Hamaxae cum articulis, ut hamaxae Garratt, quae reapse sunt duae hamaxae a fervefactorio coniugatae, symbolum inter descriptionas quaeque hamaxae habent. Ita hamaxa Garratt generis "double Pacific" (Latine "Pacifica bina" dicere possumus) est 4-6-2 2-6-4.

Genera simpliciores ut hamaxae Mallet, quae axes non pellandi inter axes pellandi non habent, plures greges numerorum in medio habent. Ita hamaxa Union Pacific Big Boy est 4-8-8-4; sunt duas axes praecedentas, una grex quattuor axium pellandi, alia grex quattuor axium pellandi, tum duas axes sequentas.

In usu Britannico, aliquando postpositiones hamaxae cum lacu significandae sunt plures: littera T lacum lateralem significat, PT est lacus in soraco, ST est lacus in ephippio, WT est lacus in puteo. T T hamaxum cum lacu et curru significat.

In Europa, postpositio R hamaxam pro ferrivia dentata significet (e.g. 0-6-0RT) aut hamaxum quae directionem invertere potest (e.g. 0-6-0TR), quae est hamaxae Bi-cabine in usu in Gallia.

In Britannia, hamaxae parvae Diselianae benziniorumque maxime sunt in eodem modo descriptae, e.g. 0-4-0, 0-6-0, 0-8-0. Postpositiones possunt D (Diseliana) aut P (benzinii) et alia littera pro genere transmissionis: E (electrica), H (hydraulica), M (mechanica). Ita 0-6-0DE hamaxam Diselianam cum sex rotis et transmissione electrica significat. Si axes sunt vinculis scapisve (pro radio laterale) coniunctae aut singulariter pellatae, symbolis 4w, 6w, 8w utentur.
