Notes on the State of Virginia
Notes on the State of Virginia (Annotationes de Civitate Virginia) est liber a Thoma Ieffersonio scriptus annoque 1785 prolatus. Primum textum anno 1781 perfecit, quem amplificavit et renovavit annis 1782 et 1783. Liber ortus est e quaestionibus de Virginia, quas Franciscus Barbé-Marbois, tum secretarius legationis Francicae Philadelphiae missae, in capite ad tempus Coloniarum Foederatarum, anno 1780 quaesiverat.
Hoc opus, lata habitum liber Americanus maximi momenti ante 1800 prolatus,[1][2] est compilatio rerum de civitatis opibus naturalibus et oeconomia, atque argumentum alacre de ingenio bonae societatis, quae quidem credidit Ieffersonius in Virginia reperi poterat. Ieffersonius exposuit cogitationes de separatione ecclesiae et civitatis, rectione constitutionali, coercitione et aequilibritate, et libertate hominum. Copiose scripsit de servitute, difficultatibus miscegenationis, et notione albicolores et nigricolores in societate libera una habitare non posse. Opus primum protulit sine nomine Lutetiae anno 1785, cum munus vicarii commercii pro gubernatione Civitatum Foederatarum sustineret. Ioannes Stockdale primam libri editionem Anglicam Londinii anno 1787 protulit.
