Inter linguas Austricas[1] Gulielmus Schmidt voluit includere Austronesianae cum Austroasiaticis. Hanc hypothesim a paucis eruditis receptam Paulus Benedict resurrexit anno 1942 sed familiam hypotheticam Austro-Tai, a seipso inventam, inseruit. Igitur quattuor familias late receptas in Austricam inclusit:

De hac re eruditus Sören Egerød recentius disseruit, taxonomistaque Meritt Ruhlen in scheda eius cognationis linguarum orbis terrarum familiam Austricam recipit. Renuentibus autem fere omnibus aliis, Benedict ipse anno 1975 coniunctionem "Austricam" (id est, inter linguas Austroasiaticas et Austro-Tai) abiecerat, annoque 1990 temptavit coniunctionem inter linguas Austro-Tai et Iaponicam.[2]
