Mental Health Tip from FSHN: 5 Ways to Self-Soothe After a Difficult Day: Spend some time out in the sun (wearing sunblock, of course). Have a meaningful conversation with someone who you feel safe and comfortable with. Listen to some uplifting or relaxing music while taking a walk. Engage in an activity that gets you moving and releases endorphins. Express your emotions freely (have a good cry, write it out, go to therapy). Difficult days can cause us to feel overwhelmed and out of balance. Learning to self-soothe can be an invaluable skill during times of high stress and discomfort. Self-soothing behaviors help us regulate our emotions and cope with difficult situations. What types of self-soothing practices do you follow?

Mental Health Advice from FSHN: Things to Say Instead of “It’s Okay” (when it’s not okay): “Even if that wasn’t your intent, what you said hurt me.” “I appreciate you apologizing.” “I need time to process this before I respond.” “I hope this will not happen again.” “I forgive you. How do we move forward.” Being polite and agreeable are not bad qualities; however, when we are too polite and we say ‘it’s okay’ when it actually isn’t, then we are doing a disservice to ourselves by not honoring and vocalizing our actual thoughts and emotions. Sometimes we do this to avoid conflicts or to just get through the moment, and so this statement serves a purpose. If, however, we continue to do so, then it can become more difficult to acknowledge and accept our feelings or learn how to handle difficult situations. These sample phrases are some that you can try instead of saying “it’s okay”, when it’s not.

Watch Out for Toxic Positivity – Here are some common sayings: · Good vibes only. · If other can do it, you can do it too. · Stop being so negative. · Be grateful it’s not worse. · Everything happens for a reason. · Just stop thinking about it. · It shouldn’t affect me. I am stronger than this. Toxic positivity is the pressure to be happy and look on the bright side no matter what the circumstances, even if they are difficult, painful ones. Toxic positivity encourages us to deny all negative emotions and can sometimes suggest that our feelings are wrong. A healthier approach is to make space for difficult emotions and allow yourself to practice self-compassion during difficult times.
