The Net-Zero Industries Mission proudly showcased its key milestones and achievements at the Innovation Forum yesterday, on the 3rd of October! 🚀 The mission has made remarkable progress! One of the key milestones this year was a bilateral research funding call between Austria and Australia, aiming to advance breakthrough technologies by 2030. 🏆 The Net-Zero Industries Award 2024 received an impressive 70 submissions from 26 countries, celebrating innovative decarbonisation projects and visionary leaders. Outstanding contributions to industrial decarbonisation will be recognized at the Net-Zero Industries Award Ceremony at #COP29 in Baku. This morning at #CEM15MI9 we hosted an interesting dialogue on decarbonising #cement with #CCUS. #carboncapture is a vital technology for the global cement sector, with the potential to account for well over 1/3 of #emissionreduction from now to 2050. A few key points: ➡ Industry needs #CCUS and several governments are supporting first-mover projects. Industry has ~100 carbon capture projects in the pipeline, with the potential to capture ~50Mt of #CO2 per year. ➡ Companies that reduce their emissions with #carboncapture must be able to credibly show that their product is #zerocarbon. Hence GHG accounting methodologies are vital. Great work on the topic by CEM IDDI - and it's only a start! ➡ Major opportunity exists to deploy carbon capture in the cement sector in #India. With partners Global CCS Institute and GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association we have looked into the first opportunities. Work now continues to further define first-mover projects. #China is also getting active in supporting carbon capture in cement. Very engaging discussion in our "Decarbonizing Industries: A North-South Collaborative Approach" event at the Clean Energy Ministerial today. A few interesting takeaways on what that collaboration should look like: 🌍 Decarbonized industry requires clean energy, so industrial value chains will shift to places with the best clean energy resources, away from the global North and towards the South. This can be done in ways that benefit both sides, so global North and South countries should start discussing the prospect seriously. 💲 Decarbonized industrial goods will be more expensive to produce than their carbon-intensive counterparts for many years to come, so levelling the playing field will be crucial, particularly through carbon pricing. Given that many industrial goods are internationally traded, global South and North countries should work together to align carbon prices and carbon tariffs to create an international level playing field. ✅ All of the above will require robust and widely accepted international standards for decarbonized industrial goods. As the recent Standards Map of the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) shows, these standards are already under development for key industrial goods, so global South and North countries should collaborate to drive their alignment, acceptance, and adoption.
