On December 5, 2023, three delegates from the Kyrgyzstan capital market visited KSD to sign a memorandum of understanding on mutual cooperation. Mr. Marat Pirnazarov, he Chairman of the State Service for Regulation and Supervision of the Financial Market, Ms. Aziza Yuldasheva, the CEO of the Closed Joint Stock Company Central Depository (CJSC CD), and Mrs. Aida Ismailova, the Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to the Republic of Korea, were warmly greeted by Mr. Soonho Lee, the Chairman and CEO of KSD, and Mr. Koohyun Kang, the Chief Managing Director of KSD. With a dashing stroke of pen, the MOU was signed and signaled the start of an exciting journey for mutual partnership between KSD and CJSC CD. The Kyrgyzstan delegates wished to expand the depth and breadth of mutual collaboration with a particular focus on advancing the financial market infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan based on the expertise of KSD.

On December 1, 2023, 16 financial specialists from Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand visited our Seoul office to attend a capacity building program. As part of the support for the Korean government’s Korea-ASEAN Solidary Initiative, Sejong Institute partnered with KB Financial Group to launch Sejong-KB ASEAN Young Leaders Fostering Project. KSD was chosen as one of the participating training institutions to educate the 16 trainees about the roles and functions of CSD in Korea. During the training program, the visitors were informed about how KSD is buttressing the Korean capital market as a critically-important FMI and what kinds of services we offer for market stability and client convenience.

On November 9, 2023, the Mongolian Central Securities Depository (MCSD) paid a courtesy visit to our Seoul office for a CEO-level meeting. The MCSD delegates included Mr. Tavinjil Choijilsuren (Chairman of the Board of Directors), Mr. Enkhsakhan Mandakh (CEO), Mr. Battulga Khatanbaatar (Senior Officer), and Mr. Bileg-arium Ganbaatar (Marketing Specialist). MCSD signed an MOU with KSD in December 2019 to promote mutual partnership via various avenues such as workshops, training, study visits, secondment, etc., with a particular focus on the advancement of the Mongolian capital market infrastructure. Both organizations will continue to act in good faith and seek further collaboration in the post-trade space by sharing relevant know-how and experiences.

On November 14, 2023, KSD joined the Annual Training Seminar of AECSD in Almaty which was hosted by the Secretariat of the Association and the CSD of Kazakhstan (Central Securities Depository JSC). With the global pandemic fading away, the seminar returned as the first in-person event in the past four years and also offered an option to participate online. Over 20 participants attended the seminar in person with 100 attendees connected online. The event began with welcoming remarks by the Chairman Dr. Ekrem Arikan of AECSD and the Chairman Adil Mukhamedzhanov of the Kazakhstan CSD, who stressed the key role of central depositories in alluring global investment flows, as well as the role of the AECSD in spreading knowledge among its participants. John Oh, the Manager from the Global Cooperation Department of KSD, informed the audience about the accelerated settlement driven by the U.S. (transition to T 1) and its operational impacts. As a member of AECSD, KSD will continue to promote the post-trade dialogue for further harmonization in the region.  

13 young and aspiring employees of KSD hopped on a flight bound for Hong Kong to take part in the “Jump-up” on-the-job training program between October 30 and November 3, 2023. This OJT program is designed to build up the capabilities of assistant managers employed by KSD for longer than three years. The one-week journey started from the study visits to the Hong Kong branches of Citibank, Euroclear, Bloomberg, Hong Kong Exchange (HKEX), and Barclays, ending with a wrap-up session at the Hong Kong representative office of KSD. The OJT program offered an invaluable opportunity to hear from the seasoned industry experts regarding how the cross-border trading of securities is powered by the linkage between KSD and global custodians and ICSDs for global custody and settlement services.

During October 22 and 31, 2023, KSD invited 15 delegates from the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the State Securities Commission (SSC), the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), and the Vietnam Securities Depository and Clearing Corp. (VSDC) to a workshop program at its Busan headquarters and Seoul office in order to fulfill the goal of the project of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) themed as “Capacity Building for Capital Market Digitalization in Vietnam”. The workshop was provided as the Phase 1 program of the KOICA project and themed around the basic capacity building for participants with regard to the capital market development. A series of lectures addressed various topics including the overview of KSD, the Korean capital market, and capital market regulations, e-voting, securities information management services, investment fund services, FundNet, collateral management, repo, global custody and settlement, CCP, digital currency, and digital payment and open banking. The workshop program will return in even better shape next year for Phase 2 project implementation with a particular focus on digitalization and IT system advancement.

KSD attended the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Asia-Pacific CSD Group (ACG25) which was hosted by the Vietnam Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (VSDC) at the Furama Resort in Da Nang, Vietnam, between October 17 and 19, 2023. ACG25 brought together 100 delegates from 35 institutions in 24 countries, offering a unique platform of regional dialogue and knowledge sharing on ACG agenda, business strategies, industry trends, pain points, best practices and new tech solutions. During the TF Breakout Session, KSD delivered a presentation as the convener of the New Business Initiative Task Force (NBI TF) regarding the activities in 2023 (e.g. the 23th ACG CTS NBI Session, the release of AFSF annual report) and the action plan for 2024 (e.g. CTS activities and the 6th AFSF Knowledge Sharing Workshop).

KSD held a workshop on crowdfunding for the delegates from PT Kustodian Sentral Efek Indonesia (KSEI) in its headquarters in Busan between September 14 and 15, 2023. On the first day of the workshop, the Indonesian participants were informed about the overview of KSD, the crowdfunding landscape in Korea and the crowdfunding service of KSD, and in return, explained the crowdfunding developments in Indonesia. During the Market Participant session on the following day, KSD invited one of the intermediaries in Korea, Crowdy, which shared insights on the securities-type crowdfunding service and addressed the questions from the KSEI delegates. In the crowdfunding scene, KSD will continue to manage issuer & investor data, control issuance & investment limits, and process documentation as a central repository.
